Craig, and probably Bryan, would know about slivovitz.  If you like I can ask Craig.

I don't like vodka but I had some delicious slivovitz with Craig in both Romania & Slovakia.

DR George when you mentioned dessert at your sister's house I wondered if anyone would be eating it.

Oh, it will be eaten...it just wasn't eaten last night. ;D

I'm sure :)

I just remembered that Bryan made slivovitz that was rather tasty.

Thanks for the booze suggestions. I have about a week to ponder the gift.

I walked to the bodega at 83rd and Amsterdam and about died from shock. About two months they cleared out the market, turned it into a deli with a lot of tables for lunch, and cleared out all their excellent stock of foodstuffs. That leaves just the bodega around the corner. I like them but their stock is always poor.  Whenever I go there for something definite, it's out of stock. Always.

Michael Brown died eleven days ago, I just learned on Facebook.  I had a chance to meet him about four years ago and the opportunity got by him. He may best be remembered for a song from NEW FACES OF 1952 that was later a hit for the Chad Mitchell trio. It went:
Oh, you can't chop your mama up in Massachusetts,
Even if you're tired of her cuisine.
No, you can't chop your papa up in Massachusetts;
You know it's certain sure to cause a scene.

He also wrote the caustic "John Birch Society," lyrics for THE HOUSE OF FLOWERS, and a lot of revue songs and a couple of children's books. I want to hear "Won't You Come home, Judge Crater."

Now, what few know is that Michael and his wife were friends of truman Capote, and they gave Harper Lee in 1956 an income for a year to write To Kill A Mockingbird, and for that alone he deserves sainthood.

I like that blog DR SINGDAW - although I am always a bit afraid that I picture I have taken or one that I am in will appear there.

They recently featured a photo from a production of CARRIE: THE MUSICAL from the local theatre that produced MR BK's BRAINEX a couple of years ago.

Congrats, Ben, on your milestone. So sorry to read about your dental woes. My mother is going through the same deal now, except that these were her last natural teeth. She's on soft food now, too. Jell-O is part of her repertoire.

A blender's a good friend, as I recall from my liquid diet before I had to have surgery years ago.

Cherries were cheap at the market today. I couldn't resist. The first ones are never quite ripe, but any is better than nothing in my book.

After seeing a Facebook hint over the weekend, I received reliable confirmation this morning that my former co-worker Leon has passed away.  He was the nonprofit outreach librarian with whom I started working in 2000 and who handed me that job when he retired in 2003.  He was one-of-a-kind and will be sorely missed in the Dayton community.

Ginny, my condolences on the loss of your former co-worker.

Ditto!

Thank you, DR Elmore.

DR Ginny, my condolences on the loss of your former co-worker.  It sounds like you were very lucky to have Leon in your professional life.

Thank you, DR Jane.  We didn't always see eye to eye, but my career would have been far less interesting without him.  It was Leon who recommended the (then) Comfort Inn on 46th St. in NYC to me.

I have been remiss today in extending my condolences to the family and community of the young man who died in the farming accident in Indiana.

I had a meatless Cobb salad for lunch, had a good and brief work session with John Boswell, and then spent three hours doing an edit road map for our next project or one of our next projects.  Two really fun scores on one CD by a composer I love - one has been out on LP (and an import CD) before, but the main score is a world premiere and it's great.

Richard and I just had BLT sandwiches for dinner and watched WAIT UNTIL DARK.  He'd never seen it and I remembered it as one of my favorite movies from high school.  What I didn't remember was the bentwood rocking chair in Suzy and Sam's apartment, which must have given me the idea that I'd have to have one some day.

DR Jennifer it seems a bit early to be celebrating with fireworks.  Was yesterday declared your official Canada Day?

No those fireworks are on Canada Day next Tuesday.  Last night's were for today's holiday, St. Jean Baptiste Day (Quebec Day).

Tomorrow is the first swim meet of the summer (they are every Wednesday).  The main coach has been absent. And the replacement coaches (who don't seem that knowledgeable about how to sign swimmers up for the different strokes) decided that it was a good idea to put my niece and the best girl on the swim team in the same race.  It will be interesting to see if the main coach tells them that is a stupid idea (too late for tomorrow's meet).

In the summer the 8 and unders only swim 25m (in the winter they swim 50m). Hopefully they can find two people for their relay.

I guess that story that went viral on Facebook about the little girl asked to leave KFC because other customers were bothered by her face, which was scarred thanks to a pit bull attack is - guess what - completely bogus and a hoax.  Furthermore, what everyone failed to point out was that the pit bulls were owned by her grandfather.  KFC was threatened, spat upon and harangued by one and all - they apologized even though something smelled fishy about it, and also pledged 30K for the girls' surgeries.  They investigated (outside investigator), and it's a hoax - the family were never at the KFC as they said.  How much more of this crap will happen on Facebook?  I suppose now that in this country we're all guilty until proven innocent - that's sure the way this went down.  And it's certainly the way I've personally been treated for the last two months, so I get it.  But KFC is still giving the family the money - but I don't see all the little rush to judgment people posting that they're sorry they rushed to judgement and did all that lambasting.  No, they just disappear into the good night.  Blechhh.

That's amazing, DR Ginny.  Well, I'm due for a watching of WAIT UNTIL DARK, so I shall make that happen sometime soon and watch for the bentwood.

When I saw my friend's, I was amazed at the lovely lines.  He said it looked better than it felt (which I believe is along the lines of what you said?).

From the beginning I read the dog belonged to the grandfather and that the grandmother had since divorced him.  I hoped it wouldn't prove to be a hoax.  I think all along KFC has shown class in their handling of this.
