Morning, all!

So sad to hear about Mary Rodgers. I never did put my copy of "Hey, Love" on ye olde iPod, but I'll be sure to do so now. I sat near her once, at a very mediocre production of "Boys From Syracuse" (she was acknowledged at the end of the show). "Mattress" has so many great lyrics (the whole "Alas/a lass/I lack/alack" bit is pure joy).

Ben: Enjoy seeing Ruby! I remember him very fondly from my Eighty-Eights days, and I'm so thrilled to hear that he's still around. His version of "Let Them Hear You" from Ragtime is still my definitive one.

Here is a great collection of Mary Rodgers YouTube clips. You can also follow the links to the full 1964 television Once Upon a Mattress (in three parts):

TOD:

Assuming it arrives from Netflix, we'll be watching REASONABLE DOUBT this weekend.

Also, I still have the original cast CDs of THE BRIDGES OF MADISON COUNTY and A GENTLEMAN'S GUIDE TO LOVE AND MURDER that I haven't heard yet.

We watched HOTEL BERLIN on TCM last night.  I'd never seen it before, and it's quite good; written by Vicki Baum, who wrote GRAND HOTEL.  The story is set at the end of WW2.

I assume the film is not that well known because it has a "B," albeit talented, cast.  There are no major names, just good actors like Raymond Massey, Peter Lorre, Andrea King, etc.  Lorre was superb in a very un-Lorre type of role.

2 of Dawn Powell's early books are available for download as free e-books at the Internet Archive. Scroll to the bottom and you'll see the files. You can download them as e-pub or Kindle files.

Thank you, thank you, thank you for that link, Ben. Whither, a book Powell loathed (it was her first), is the only one that hasn't been reprinted. Now I can read it and judge for myself.

Once Upon a Mattress and (once I find that I actually have this, but I think I do) Hey, Love

BLU -- Runaway Train -- wow!  Had never seen it.  Got through half of it last night before falling asleep, which I hated doing but couldn't help it.

In looking at things about Mary Rodgers on the Internet, I somehow found myself reading yet another debate about the merits of son Adam's score for A Light in the Piazza.

I adore the score and found the original production incredibly moving, but what strikes me is the disparate array of reactions to the score: from pure adulation to pure loathing.

I didn't know Powell at all until Ginny talked about her. Because she's an early century writer I looked to see if any of her stuff was at Gutenberg or Many Books. No luck there but the Internet Archive, a great resource has those 2 books. Open Library, another Internet lending library, has 17 of her books in some form

DR TCB:  Saying "a young Sondheim" and "a young Cariou" would necessitate saying "an alive Gingold".  That wouldn't do, so the writer made it Sondheim-centric and only alluded to the fact that you can see a smooth Sondheim face in those photos.

Shia LaBoeuf:  I have enjoyed performances by him in several films, but nothing that would have me believe he is entitled to any consideration for anti-social behavior.

He is to be pitied, yes, but he needs to wake up before it's too late.

I've got all her novels that were reissued, the volume of collected plays, the Tim Page bio and the volume of collected letters. I kinda went Powell crazy in the 1990s. Still love her stuff.
