You didn't run into the errant and truant DR Jason, did you?

I did not, unfortunately,  I understand he was in town but had tickets to another show

Listening to the Rachmaninov first piano concerto with Ormandy and Entremont - going from the second piano concerto with Bernstein and the NY Phil, the sound difference is instantly apparent with Philadelphia hugely better.  I'm very fond of the first piano concerto and then it's on to the fourth.

Well, the second weekend of "The Tempest" is done with.  The performances this whole weekend have gone quite well.  A friend who now lives in NYC is visiting for the summer and he came to the show.  When he moved to NYC, Robert, our director, also moved to NYC, but Robert moved back to Olympia and has no plans to move back.

After last night's show, Robert had a cast party at his house (coincidentally, it's actually just a couple of houses down from a coworker of mine) and I didn't leave until about 2:30 am, this morning.  I came home and went right to bed.  Just as soon as I woke up this morning, I had to get ready for today's show.

After today's show, I went downtown to Olympia's Capitol Lakefair and bought a new tie-dyed t-shirt.  It's various shades of purple and lavender.  It's really nice!

Sad news - apparently we have lost James Garner.

I'd read about this when I was at the theater. :(

From yesterday:
Quote
Just had a nice e-mail from a film composer whose work I discovered recently - I think we're going to be able to put out a score or two by him, including the one that introduced him to me.
Quote
Deal is done for the two scores - the composer is Soren Hyldgaard and the scores are the Danish miniseries I spoke of the other day, The Spider, and the movie I watched last night, Red.

Congrats, BK!

I bought a new rocking chair for my front porch at the Marsh Grocery Store.  The manager sold me the one that he had put together - which was very nice of him to do.

I want to buy a small white table now....since the brown one doesn't match.

Jrand, that's a very nice looking chair.  What if you just painted that table white...or would it not go with the chair even if you did paint it?

Today is National Ice Cream Day.  Just so you know.      :)

In honor of of the day I had a junior scoop of peppermint stick ice cream on a sugar cone.

Even without knowing about this, I went to Dairy Queen and had a S'Mores Blizzard.  I love the Dairy Queen S'Mores Blizzard!

Iinteresting about the bass player.  FWIW, I noticed nothing amiss.  But I can well believe there's no one in the world like Jay Leonhart.

And I love the way Sandy sings Jay's "Christmas in the City" on her album. Such a great song.

Very much enjoyed the notes on Ormandy.

Since my parents had joined the Columbia Record Club, a number of our classical albums were Ormandy, too.  (That would change a little, for me, as I gravitated toward Bernstein with the emergence of West Side Story and the Symphonic Dances album, and later the Mahler symphonies.)  I don't remember many specific albums, but Ormandy's Grand Canyon Suite comes to mind.  If you want to laugh, at that time I was judging Grand Canyon Suite recordings by how I liked the obligatory cover photograph, and Ormandy's is burned into my memory.

We probably had an Entremont recording or two, but I think our Columbia expenditures leaned more heavily toward Broadway cast albums and my dad's Mitch Miller albums.  At some point in my high school years I started my own membership in the RCA club, probably more for the additional cast albums than anything.

I've said previously that Ormandy's "Carmina Burana" holds a special place in the heart, and I still have it on a pristine original LP and on reel-to-reel tape.

I have this recording of the Grand Canyon Suite, conducted by Arturo Toscanini:

It's a set of four, red vinyl 7-inch records with metal (not plastic) record adapters.  I've never listened to them (although I've heard another recording of the music), but someone put a live recording from 1943 on YouTube.

George, I'm glad you're getting good houses for the Tempest. How much longer does the show run.

BTW, I love the idea of partying until 7:30 a.m. That's so far in my past. But I have some wonderful dim memories.
