Well, you've read the notes, the notes had a sound check and were showy, and now it is time for you to post until the showy cows come home.

There were several CD box sets released last year that consist of nothing but different recordings of Stravinsky's Rite of Spring.

Probably not appropriate for listening while sitting in LA traffic.        :)

The E-mail spammers must have decided that weekends are when I am most receptive to advertising. My gosh, they go to town on my inbox - especially, it seems, on Sunday mornings.       :P

Good morning, all.

It's overcast and there has been some very gentle rain falling, with some nice breezes, this morning.  Frankly, I wouldn't mind if that lasted all day, but I think it's supposed to clear up.

Man, I so remember those times in L.A. I wished it would just rain, and rain some more.

I get to laze around for another hour or so, and then I must get me ready to drive an hour into deepest darkest Connecticut to see PETER PAN.

I remember when the Philadelphia Orchestra moved from Columbia to RCA.  Things like that were a really big deal then.  Scandal in the music world!  But I wasn't following it other than noting it at the time, and I'd love to read some history of this stuff now.  Also, if I'm remembering the timeline right, I was heavily into acquiring and listening to Toscanini recordings -- as much, if not more than, the contemporaries -- so I was hearing relatively few of the new Ormandy releases.

So along with the musical chairs, weren't recording techniques changing quite a bit in those years?  The quality of vinyl in this country was certainly taking a turn for the worse.  A confluence of bad events.  Remember RCA's "flexible" LPs?  Those, in retrospect, may not in and of themselves been a bad thing, but they sure added to the impression of increasingly shitty quality.  And the exact opposite was happening in Europe, where the quality of vinyl was incredible.

Back to Philadelphia.  Was that change well received back then?  I want to say no, that most people didn't think it was a good idea at all, but these are vague general impressions.  But in reading BK's observations now, I'm thinking the "people" were right!  :)

Back to Columbia.  Reading a little bit in the audiophile press in later years, I learned that the classical recordings engineered by John McClure at Columbia are now held in high regard because there they employed good clear (and simple) miking with none of the doctoring that came later.  (I don't know if he did any of Philadelphia's.)

Sorry for the rambling mess.  I'm pulling bits and pieces of memory out of my arse as I type.  Which makes for a lovely mental image, don't you think?

Good morning, all! I slept late and I hope the laundry room is free so I can do this laundry, vacuum, and tidy up.

I've been up about an hour, reading the Proms reviews for last night's "Kiss Me Kate," for which I recommended my Indiana friend Ben Davis, dealing with a computer backup, and pondering my life.

More to follow.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Vibes to Michael Shayne, BK, TCB, vixmom, Jeanne, and others in need! ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
!!!!!!!
I read through some of the comments, and ... maybe it's not a joke?  I don't know.  There are a lot of crazy ideas out there, some of which seem to work.
But not for me, thanks.   :)   I'll stick with my VPI HW-17.
Which, by the way, I am shocked -- no, actually, make that stunned -- to google, and to find it going for as much as ... $1,800???
Maybe THOSE web pages are the joke!  Lordy.  (I paid $500 for a secondhand one some 20 years ago, for what was then an $800 machine.)
The laundry room was empty, so things are cooking this morning. The laundry is in the washers, and I need to make the bed, pick up, toss, and vacuum.
The laundry is in the dryers and the apartment is tidies up, except for that one corner I need to tackle.
I need to check out methods of getting to City Hall and the jury room before I decide to ask my doctor for an out from jury duty.  There may be a  bus to get me there easily. We'll see.
