Strange relationship with Joyce's Ulysses. Read it for the first time in high school. Didn't understand much of it, but loved the humor amid the sadness that I got from it. Read it again in my 20s and my 40s. Still don't know that I got it -- I can get too impatient with writing that dense -- but I enjoyed it a lot more both times. Brutal wit and dazzling writing, some of it too self-congratulatory, but fascinating. Will likely read it again in 10 years or so.

Never tried Finnigan's Wake.

My close personal friend Stephen Rea played Leopold Bloom in an adaptation of ULYSSES.

Greetings from Toyland!

I have a score to assemble and bind and some things to cart home.

Today, because the last mayor and his regime decided to screw up traffic and turn Broadway from 57th Street to 34th Street into a pedestrian mall, traffic was impossible. It took me 75 minutes to get here from the Upper West Side. My arrival is later than I desired but i must get to work

Thursday morning greetings!  Just made deviled eggs to take to my book group potluck tonight.  We read The Book Thief and will watch the movie together this evening.  This is an annual August event to celebrate the groups anniversary - 23 this year!

Here's my Throwback Thursday photo for today.  Dad took this picture of Mom and me on a 747, Rose Bowl bound in late December 1971.  After he took the photo and we ate dinner, he disappeared to the bar upstairs where he played the piano and people bought him drinks all the way to LAX.

TOD:

Many - several already mentioned....so I will add:

A Big Hand for the Little Lady

Lucy Goes to Monte Carlo, a very funny episode of I Love Lucy

Steve McQueen in an episode of Alfred Hitchcock - a man bets him a large sum of money against Steve's THUMB that his lighter will not light ten times in a row.

Viva Las Vegas....although it's more about car racing

James Caan in The Gambler

I've collated and bound my full orchestra score of Porgy and Bess into the volumes, one for each act, pulled a number of CDs and I am ready to head for the bus. I can put JUBILEE on hold till Saturday.

Great photo, Ginny. And hope the thunderstorm isn't too bad.

Elmore, I didn't know of that version of Ulysses. I had seen the Milo O'Shea movie, which was wonderful in its way. And I love the Bloomsday events at Symphony Space and the like. I tried to organize one once, but couldn't get enough readers.

TOD2:

Strike It Rich with Robert Linsday and Molly Ringwald, based on Graham Greene's Loser Takes All. A very sweet little movie. Not great by any means, but I really enjoy watching it.

Oh, man.  Those were the days, in all those respects.  Great picture!

Actually, I did a double-take because, at least in that photograph, the daughter bears a very slight resemblance to ... (wait for it) ... The Vixter!

Yes, that's true.

And I am home! Took abut 40 minutes, which seems to be the average time for the uptown ride.

Thanks, DR John G!  It's still raining, but the thunder and lightening have stopped.

Does anyone still wear a hat fly a 747?

Back to oatmeal for breakfast instead of those yummy free Holiday Inn Express breakfasts of sticky buns and omelets and and pancakes, etc. They did have oatmeal but since I'm on vacation I decided not to eat it and go for the fun stuff.

Good for you, Ben!
