I'm still not sure about this, but I'll stick it out for at least another episode.  I just read "Some Answers to Questions...[spoilers ] on IMDb, which answers some questions.  The original poster read the book and what he posted makes sense and sounds kind of interesting.  As long as the TV show doesn't get stupid, I'll probably keep watching it...probably. :)

TOD:
I actually have two answers to this question. The first book I ever read that was an actual novel, not a little Dr. Seuss book was "Charlotte's Web". I know that's still a children's book, but at the time it was a big deal that I was reading something with that many pages. The first actual adult book I ever read was "To Kill a Mockingbird". I believe both those books were school assignments that I was forced to read. I wasn't a big reader, like my older sister was.

And i am home from the movies. Matthew and I had to decide between BOYHOOD and LOVE IS STRANGE, which worked for out time slot. We went in expecting a comedy of sorts and emerged from a very moving independent film with a great cast: John Lithgow, Alfred Molina, Harriet Harris, Cheyenne Jackson, and Marisa Tomei in a really marvelous performance. It is not a comedy but it was truly wonderful and heartbreaking.

I really want to see both movies. Glad to hear Love is Strange is that good. And I love the cast.

It reminded me a bit of the Beulah Bondi film Make way For Tomorrow.

That was one of the most heartbreaking movies I've ever seen.

Which, "Make Way for Tomorrow" or "Love is Strange"?

Didn't you see his comment implying that he had not seen "Love is Strange"?

Obviously not or I forgot about the comment by the time I asked the question-lol

I'm now on my third load of laundry.

I decided to stop at two loads since the 3rd one wasn't very full.

Thanks for the report.  I think I'll read the spoilers.

We found our first episode of DOCTOR WHO intriguing.  We plan to watch it again.

I read the spoilers and have decided I do not want to continue with the show.  I will share it with Keith and see what he has to say about it.

This reminds me....I should write former DR Matt H and ask for new September show recommendations.

I put my third load of laundry in the dryer and I'm now going to watch the second episode of "Doctor Who."

By adult I mean not a book geared to children.
I knew what you meant! Although I admit the other meaning did cross my mind. That said, the first book I read that had rather "mature" content was "Proposition 22". It was my sister's book, and my dad wasn't pleased that I was reading it. The funny thing is that he didn't take it away from me. He just went and yelled at my sister about it. She in turned yelled at me for showing it to him.

Somehow I missed reading many of the classic children & young adult books until I was older.  I didn't read either Charlott's Webb or Mockingbird until I was an adult.  I read The Secret Garden just before going into 10th grade when a new friend lent it to me.  I didn't read The Chronicles of Narnia until I was pregnant with Bryan.  I read many of the classics as Bryan read them.

So, where would The Adventures of Tom Sawyer fit in all of this? I think I read that in fourth grade.

But now, I'm going to take out my trash, then go to for some food.  I've been home all day doing laundry and I just want to get out.

Be back later. :)

TOD

All day I've been thinking I have not the slightest idea what the first book would have been, but I have remembered that it's very likely Tales of Edgar Allan Poe in the dark green Random House edition (with woodcuts by Fritz Eichenberg) my mother always had.  I remember reading a few of the stories in a house we lived in prior to seeing the first of the Roger Corman films.  It's possible that I'd seen the trailer for "House of Usher" then, but if not, I was being drawn to horror and supernatural stories anyway at that time.

(To this day, that Random House edition remains one of my favorite Poe volumes, and my attraction to that book extended to the Random House editions of the Bronte novels, also illustrated by Eichenberg.  And one or two other things that escape me at the moment.)

I also remember reading sections of my mother's copy of Gone With the Wind , probably just a little later than the Poe.

Watching a piece of drive-in garbage called "Malibu Beach." Pure junk. The shark special effect must have cost $1.99.
