Good morning, all!  I thought I was coming down with a cold yesterday, so i went to bed around 7:30 and slept for about eleven hours.  It may be allergies, but the sleep helped.

I will head to physical therapy in another hour.  When I get home, I have a lot of laundry to do, about two weeks of it, thanks to my current limited income and the unavailability of the laundry room while the elevator was out.

Good morning, all.

An okay sleep, but of course I could have used another decent hour.  Alas, it is not to be.  And so I say to you all.....

Coffee!

I have some music to work on today.  And I should try to get outside and do the first big leaf-blowing of the season, but I don't know if that will happen.

TOD:

CDs -- ROBERTA, AND THE WORLD GOES ROUND, RAGTIME.

I won't have much time for movies till probably Sunday evening, but I have the DVD of RAGTIME standing by for my second viewing, the first having been the week it opened, nearly 33 years ago.  I'm almost done reading the novel, again for my first time since it first appeared.

This event may be of some interest to our NYC-area Dear Readers:

A Leonard Bernstein Mass Symposium

The Aaron Copland School of Music and the Kupferberg Center for the Arts will present a fully staged performance of Leonard Bernstein "Mass" on Nov. 1 and 2 at Colden Auditorium in Queens College. Leading up to the performance, on Oct. 21 a panel of experts will discuss the composer, the work, the premiere, and the legacy of Bernstein's most ambitious and once controversial composition.

Participants:
Maurice Peress,  conductor of the 1971 premiere and the current production.
Gordon Davidson,  stage director of the 1971 premiere.
Jamie Bernstein, daughter of the composer and a composer and writer herself.
Michael Hume, chorus member at the premiere, and later performed the role of Celebrant.
Lorca Peress, stage director for the current production.

Doors will open at 6:30
Symposium will start at 7:00

Macaulay Honors College (Cabaret Space)
35 W 67th St
New York, NY 10023

I love RADIO DAYS.  Also THE PURPLE ROSE OF CAIRO, CRIMES AND MISDEMEANORS, HANNAH AND HER SISTERS and many more of Woody's films.

Yes, there have been some turkeys (CELEBRITY, YOU WILL MEET A TALL DARK STRANGER), but even his lesser movies have something worthwhile in them.

I think his worst movies are the ones in which he writes a role for himself, then casts another actor and directs him to play the part in his (i.e. Allen's) rhythms.

In any event, he is one of my favorite directors.

We are going to see THE KING AND I this weekend at the Zach.

I've never seen it on stage before, so it should be fun.

I have a friend in the cast.

I have always been a fan of Radio Days. Saw in the theater the night it opened, back when a Woody Allen movie opening in upstate New York still drew large audiences. The crowd laughed at lines like "Who's Pearl Harbor?" and there was silence while Keaton sang "You'd Be So Nice to Come Home To." A great moviegoing experience.

I own a VHS of the movie, but I don't have it on DVD and haven't watched it in a few years. I may have to correct that.

I wonder how I'd like the Bernstein MASS now.  I know it's enjoyed a resurgence in popularity in recent years.  When the original recording was released, just before I moved to L.A., I was quite taken with it.  I saw that production at the Mark Taper, and bought the vocal score (probably at DeKeyser Music) which I still have.  But my fondness for it eventually took a dive, and it's been many years since I've listened to it.  I heard a few bits of a recent recording or performance on the radio last year and thought it was okay, but I wasn't compelled to jump back into it.

I simply love the Bernstein Mass. Yes, I get that the "drama" is a bit heavy-handed. But I think the MUSIC is eclecticism taken to genius level.

Today is the wedding rehearsal and dinner.....so that should be fun.  I have never been to the Indiana Historical Society building where the rehearsal and wedding will be, so it will be fun to see their new facility.  It is downtown on the canal just a few blocks from Lucas Oil Stadium.

The dinner is at the recording studio owned by the groom.....I think he had lunch with MR BK a many years ago when he was in L.A.
