What I gather from people who listen to the audio books is the right storyteller can enhance the enjoyment & often bring out the humor in the book.  Often they will begin choosing the books they listen to by who is narrating.

I have heard that too.

And I am home. Traffic is terrible on Sixth Avenue this morning and it wasa long bus ride home.

I just got a note from Patrick Cummings, my romantic lead on ROBERTA; he's doing some workshop or developmental thing at the Oregon Shakespeare Festival for a couple of weeks.

BK,

What ever happened with your audio version of the Adrianna Hoffstader books? Last I recall, you had chosen an actress and were recording them.

Good morning, all!  The curse of Daylight Savings? My internal clock tells me that 5:30 is still 6:30, so I was wide awake at 5:30.  Once I realized I wasn't going back to sleep, I got up, dressed, and voted.  I'm now on my first cuppa coffee, and at 7, I will call Fed Ex with a shipping inquiry.

The time change is affecting me, too, but the other way.  I'm going to bed and getting up...and getting to work...even later!  It's not supposed to work that way! >:(

UPDATE

Saw my knee doctor. He wants me to be off my feet for another 4 weeks. If there is no improvement then he'll talk surgery. He doesn't want to rush into surgery. If there is no improvement then he will go in "clean" the area. The last thing he wants to do is a knee replacement.

UPDATE #2
As for the thyroid situation hopefully by the end of week a final decision will be made about what they are going to do,

DR Jane (or any other DRs) have you ever listened to an audio book?

My library just got three new audio books.  Two are for books that I am going to be reading in the next few weeks. One is for a book that I just read a month or two ago.  I have never listened to an audio book before but I am curious.  So I put in a reservation for the two that I will be reading. I thought maybe I could try to listen at the same time i am reading the book that goes with it (not listen while i am reading, but alternate or listen to some passages after i have read them).

I know a lot of people who love audio books. But i have been hesitant because i like reading and feel like listening would be taking something away from the book.  I am always curious at people who write book reviews after only listening to the audio.

I don't like listening to audio books because my mind can very easily wander and then I realize that I've lost my place in the story and trying to get back to what I remember is a big hassle.  I know several people who love to listen when they drive long distances.  One coworker has a 42 minute drive each way and he can pretty much listen to half a disc each way, so a whole disc (about 80 minutes) in a day.  And when some audio books can have as many as 40 discs, it can certainly take a LONG time to get through them.

Two of my favorite shows are starting again this week.  Masterchef Junior (tonight) and White Collar (on Thursday).

Have any of you guys who like cooking/cooking shows ever seen MCJ?  I love it. My nieces are obsessed with it.  Last season was so good (the judges are much nicer to the kids than on regular MC).  It is astonishing to me that these kids can cook like they do.  Such an enjoyable show.

I love "White Collar."  Sadly, this will be the last season. :-\

Yes I have heard of people who do audio books on their commute to work or while they are on the treadmill or doing chores.  I just don't see listening to a book as being equivalent to reading a book.  But I am curious.

Well, either way it's all just story-telling.  Whether you read a book or listen to a CD, the author wrote the story.  Does it really matter how you take it in (other than if your mind wanders too much ;) )?  But then as Jane said, the narrator can make a difference.  For other coworkers of mine, the narrator can make a HUGE difference.

Today is Election Day. I already voted 3 weeks ago. I like the convenience of voting by mail, but I kind of miss the civic-mindedness of the polling place.

I miss the "I Voted" sticker. ;D

Just had a little chat with the production manager of the shoot.  He had a little attitude when he opened his trap so I shut that down so fast I think it shocked him.  He actually said, "We have the right to park on a city street" to which I replied "You really don't want to do down that road with me because I will have you out of here so fast it will make your head spin."  He then offered me money, which I refused, and then said they'd had to improvise because some neighbors where they were supposed to park hadn't moved their cars and they didn't want to tow them - I suggested they tow them immediately.  He then said he'd save me a space across the street and I said that would be fine.

The noive of some people! :P

Back from Dr. Chew - extraction healed perfectly and I'm now free to chew on that side of my mouth and floss and brush to my heart's content.  Teeth are clean as a whistle, too.

I'm sure the narrator can make a huge difference.  I just find it interesting cause I review books and I see a bunch of people review the audio books and I just don't think that it can be the same experience.  Although I really shouldn't talk since i have never listened to an audio book.  But I just see that one of the ones is ready for me to pick up.  Not sure how i will do it since i also have the book.  I think i might just read and then maybe listen to what i have read as i am falling asleep.

Tuesday afternoon greetings!  I left here about 10am, voted, then went to Dayton for the midday meeting of the grantwriters.  On the way home I stopped at the library, Starbucks, and Dorothy Lane Market.  It was sunny and beautiful when I left home and cloudy, blustery, and a little drizzly when I returned.

DR Jennifer, I'm a huge audiobook fan and, yes, the narrator can make all the difference.  My habit developed when I had a long commute and continues now for my boring basement walking and when I'm knitting.  When I was working and had a deadline to finish a book, I'd do what I called a "power read" - listening in the car and reading the book at home.  If you're listening to nonfiction, you might want the dead-tree book at hand for illustrations.  I listened to Stephen Ambrose's Undaunted Courage and Cheryl Strayed's Wild, but had to check out the book to look at the maps.

There are books I've read with my ears that I probably wouldn't have gotten through with my eyes - Annie Dillard's The Living and Geraldine Brooks' Caleb's Crossing, among others.

My favorite narrators are Kate Reading, Grace Conlin, C. J. Critt, and Orlagh Cassidy.
