Yes I have heard of people who do audio books on their commute to work or while they are on the treadmill or doing chores.  I just don't see listening to a book as being equivalent to reading a book.  But I am curious.

Well, either way it's all just story-telling.  Whether you read a book or listen to a CD, the author wrote the story.  Does it really matter how you take it in (other than if your mind wanders too much ;) )?  But then as Jane said, the narrator can make a difference.  For other coworkers of mine, the narrator can make a HUGE difference.

I'm sure the narrator can make a huge difference.  I just find it interesting cause I review books and I see a bunch of people review the audio books and I just don't think that it can be the same experience.  Although I really shouldn't talk since i have never listened to an audio book.  But I just see that one of the ones is ready for me to pick up.  Not sure how i will do it since i also have the book.  I think i might just read and then maybe listen to what i have read as i am falling asleep.

I agree it isn't the same experience.  During my book group discussions it is interesting to hear the different perspective from those that read a book to those that listen.  Sometimes those that listen have a better experience, sometimes not.

That is interesting. But I am curious why would people in a book group not read the book?

DR Jennifer did you win an advance copy of "A Thousand Pieces of You"?  I love the title.  I recommended my library order it.

I didn't win an advanced copy. But I did get an advanced copy from Edelweiss.  It was a very unique book.  I am loving Edelweiss.  For some reason the woman who does edelweiss (review site) for my favorite publisher (Harper Collins) likes me and approves me for all the books I ask for.

You write long detailed reviews so I understand why she likes you.  When I saw your review on Goodreads I tagged it "to be read".  I didn't realized it hadn't been released yet until Goodreads sent me a notification today.

I liked the first couple of seasons of "The Mentalist," before I decided the entire super-villain-all-knowing-serial-killer Red John was no longer spooky and the whole shebang was absolutely moronic. So I stopped watching. I haven't missed it at all.

I've never watched it, but I like the original version of the show...PSYCH.

LOL  Listening or reading still qualifies you to get the book read.  I get frustrated, but don't say anything, when people don't complete the book.  I have never not read a book for a discussion.  I do admit in my old age if I really don't like it I super speed read it, something I never used to do.

The more I read about audio books the more I understand why some people like them. I just find it extremely odd for someone in a book group to listen to the book vs read it.

For all the reasons they normally listen to a book.  They don't have the time to read, they like the narrator, it keeps their hands free to do other things such as dringing, etc.

Well, it's time for me to leave work and go to a Theater Artists Olympia board meeting.  Hopefully, it won't take too long...maybe an hour or so.  We're done with both "The Complete Works of William Shakespeare (Abridged) [revised]" and our fund raiser, "TAO of the Dead 2," which were both profitable...not greatly profitable, but profitable. :)

Until later!

DR Jane (or any other DRs) have you ever listened to an audio book?

My library just got three new audio books.  Two are for books that I am going to be reading in the next few weeks. One is for a book that I just read a month or two ago.  I have never listened to an audio book before but I am curious.  So I put in a reservation for the two that I will be reading. I thought maybe I could try to listen at the same time i am reading the book that goes with it (not listen while i am reading, but alternate or listen to some passages after i have read them).

I know a lot of people who love audio books. But i have been hesitant because i like reading and feel like listening would be taking something away from the book.  I am always curious at people who write book reviews after only listening to the audio.

I've listened to them in the car on a trip.  I once drove around the block about 4 times to hear the end of the book.  Why I didn't just park and listen I don't know, but I didn't

That is funny you drove instead of parking.  I guess it felt like you should be driving as usual.

This is my favorite  narrator http://www.audiofilemagazine.com/narrators/wanda-mccaddon/

I have chosen books to listen to solely because she was the reader

I used to listen to books all the time when I had my long commute (1 + hour) to work (I drove)

I also have used them while out gardening

and when we take long drives (such as our drive from NY to Florida)  we always have a few books on tape to listen to on the way

While BK was visiting Dr Chew today I was visiting my own dentist. I really like this new dentist, but every time I see him he tells me about more than needs to be done. Today it was to replace two leaky crowns. I have no doubt it needs to be done, but the $$$$ signs keep appearing before my eyes.

I used to listen to audio books. It was during a very trying period healthwise. As much as I love to read it was nice to just lie back and listen. It's a different sort of experience than reading. I enjoyed them.
