Back when Maggie Smith won the Oscar for this film, there was a story circulating that the movie's producer, Robert Fryer, financed an independent advertising/publicity campaign in the trades to win an Academy nomination for Maggie.
When she got the nomination, the people at Fox were furious. The studio head (Richard Zanuck?) called Fryer into his office and berated him for costing Barbra Streisand an Oscar nomination for HELLO, DOLLY!
