This storm is staying farther to the north than the recent ones.  We're in it here in CT, but perhaps our taking vixmom's snow this time has helped to lighten her burthen just a little bit.

From DR Jennifer:

There are many reasons the swimmer can be disqualified.  Each stroke has its own rules. You can only touch the wall with one hand in back and front, and two hands in breast and fly.  The turns are a big thing.  For relays it is the turns or if you go in before the swimmer before you touches the wall.

The biggest thing is backstroke. You cannot turn to look for the wall. And the turns have to be done a certain way.

Thanks for explaining.  It sounds like a hard but important lesson the swimmers are all learning.

I am home from therapy. I got an email from Rob Berman that our ROBERTA producer Judy Sherman got her fourth Grammy last night.  I am very happy for her.

I think (and I don't know why) they were being unnecessarily harsh.  4 out of 6 teams in one race were disqualified??  Our best team with the best swimmers??  Plus my sister said that this one lady was being such a witch about it. She was smiling as she was disqualifying kids. These are little kids (8-10).  Why would a person be happy to disqualify someone?

Sometimes there is an obvious mistake.  But I hate to see kids disqualified.

To do this with a smile also changes the lesson making it about the mean witch vs their own mistakes.  Hard on the children and harder for their adult people to watch.  It is the same as watching your child strike out at the plate.

Congrats to Ms Sherman on her Grammy!  Did Kanye try to take it away from her as she left the building?

In honor of DR Laura, I have jury duty today.  We'll see how it goes.

Just tell them to Hang the Bastard...and sing it, too!

We need pictures from the Robby Awards.

I watched the Bafta Awards instead of the Gramma Awards last night.  The Baftas were most entertaining, although the final surprise moment was spoiled by some old cow who had come out just before the give an honorary award.  MOOOOOOOO......

I totally forgot about the Grammy Awards last night. :-\

Now THIS was a voice!

http://www.broadwayworld.com/bwwopera/article/STAGE-TUBE-Anita-Darian-Dies-at-Age-87-20150202

Her voice sounds so familiar.  I must've heard her before.  I listen to a local radio station KBRD that plays nothing but songs from the 1920s to the 1970s (it's the only radio station I listen to in my car!).  I wonder if that's where I'd heard her before.

Prolly DR GEORGE she had quite an extensive recording career.

There is a studio album of the songs from SHOWBOAT with Barbara Cook as Magnolia and Anita Darian as Julie.

According to The Official Masterworks Broadway Site, "Darian's most widely distributed recording by far, although it was made anonymously, was The Tokens' 1961 hit single "The Lion Sleeps Tonight" ("[The Lion Sleeps Tonight|Wimoweh]"), on which she provided the extremely high wordless soprano vocal during the saxophone solo in counter-melody to the lead."

T.O.D.

When I was a kid, I went to the circus many times.  I saw Ringling Bros., Barnum & Bailey two or three times; but I attended the Shrine Circus every year in my youth.  In the 60's I think that Circus Vargas was the company that came to Tacoma under the banner of Shrine Circus.  My sister's future in-laws ran concessions for the Shrine Circus in town, so I didn't have to pay to get in during the mid-60's.  I believe I also saw the Clyde Beatty Circus once when i was a kid.

I always theought that the circus would be more fun than it usually turned out.
