My first trip to Vegas was in 1973.  I thought it was earlier, however, that is the year MGM opened and I remember walking around for the pre-opening.  It was a zoo and I got yelled at by a security guard for looking so young and forcing him to waste his time checking my i.d.   REALLY!

That was before Vegas got too big and crazy.  I had never seen so many lights and it was exciting.  Of course today those lights would seem like nothing.

We went with another couple and shared a room since none of us had much money.  The room was reasonable and the meals fairly inexpensive.

I'm sure we'll think about doing an East Coast concert for Sandy, just not sure when.

I met Mr. Smith at a conference years ago and spent some time with him. I corroborate everything that DR TCB remembers about him.

Well, the good news I had hoped to have this week is a bust. I appreciate your vibes, though!

Much as I find the work I am doing now fulfilling, it is funded by state grants, so never a sure or steady thing. A posting came up recently for what would have been a dream job for me. I went through several rounds of interviews, and it finally came down to me and one other candidate. This afternoon, I learned that the job has been offered to the other candidate. I am very disappointed, but it was still a good experience to go through. I hate selling myself, but I guess it is good to have to learn how to do that under pressure every now and then.

TOD: Not a Vegas fan. Been twice, hope never to go again. There was nothing worth seeing either visit.

My sentiments, exactly.  I've also been there twice - first for the ALA annual conference as I was finishing grad school in 1973.  The best part of that trip was connecting with the woman who eventually hired me to work in the library at the Middletown Campus of Miami University.  Second visit was an overnight stop on our family's big out-west driving vacation in 1996.  Rob was fascinated with ancient Egypt at the time, so we stayed in the pyramid-shaped hotel.  The next morning we drove around the strip a bit and then Richard said, "Let's get out of here!"

The Luxor was so dark that I felt all the lights were dim so you wouldn't see how cheap it is.

Bummer, Singdaw. Vibes you'll get something much better in the near future.

Got my bill today on my stupid accident from a few weeks ago. My part is over $1,000 -- because I haven't met the deductible this year. Ugh.

The damn Google DNS is screwed up again - can't believe it, really.  I am so over this crap.  Just changed the DNS number in preferences and am fine that way.  I'll just leave it there.

Watching the latest Woody Allen, "Magic in the Moonlight." Nice cast, great look, good music, tired script.

Have learned that the barbecue book is in a second printing. Doesn't mean any sort of royalty, mind you. But that is nice news.

Not a bad day, overall.  I hope to continue some of the better parts and get more work done on them tomorrow.

I also absolutely have to do my damned taxes.  I use TurboTax and can get it all done in an afternoon.  I just should have buckled down to the task a good month ago.
