Which Mahagonny, DR Elmore?

I love that piece more than I can say.

I listened to both the original 30-minute Mahagonny Songspiel and then the complete opera on Cappriccio with Anja Silja as Jenny.  I prefer Lenya, but Silja does it in the correct keys. I wish that the Met broadcast with Stratas was on CD.

I see that the delightful, abridged BBC broadcast of SHE LOVES ME is on youtube:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=db_HreIe5pY

Not on CD, but the Stratas Mahagonny telecast was FINALLY released on DVD a few years ago in the Levine 40th anniversary set...which I am totally remiss in not having acquired yet, either the CD or DVD set.  Here it is, individually:   http://goo.gl/UAsV25

It's also possible that my own off-the-air cassette tape of the afternoon broadcast might still play (it did as of several years ago...), in which case I must find the means of copying these things to CD.  And of course I will provide a copy.

And thanks for that BBC link!  I thought I had searched for that production some weeks back.  If I did, I must have given up too easily.

Of course, he's in New York and you're in Connecticut, but you and I both know a person (his initials are AM, not morning) who does that kind of copying and it's not Elmore, although he could be used as a reference in case you're wondering about quality of transfer.

I have the Stratas DVD,but I would want to watch it, not listen to it, as I worked.  I also have the Salzburg Festival DVD and the lousy Lupone-McDonald production from the Los Angeles Opera.  I want the Spanish production from Madrid, which is sung in English.

I was having some nasty back and neck problems last week and was not fit to be around man or beast--or DRs. I'm hoping they're now under control.

I think it was TCB who asked if I'd be getting a recording of the show.  I did indeed, but I've just determined that the DVD is copy-protected and I have never taken the trouble to learn how to, um, deal with that.  Fortunately, I have a friend who can take care of such annoying little matters, so next time we get together (he's in another town) I'll have him work a little magic on it.

ChasSmith, if it's possible, I'd love to have a chance to study that disc...for instructional purposes only, of course. ;)

Yes, educational purposes only. Add this student to that list.

Frozen pies, how could I not forget custard pies which I love.  They are the only frozen pies I have cooked.  I haven't seen one in years.  I should make my own.

The Iolanthe was really lovely.  I always forget how close to tragedy it gets at the end of act two, but I still laugh when the much-desired shepherdess Phyllis tells her lover Strephon, after learning that he is half fairy and his mother and aunts, who are fairies - though centuries old - look like pretty young ladies, says "Whenever I see you kissing a very young lady I shall know it's an elderly relative."

Saw that Stratas version back in high school when it was broadcast live. One of the life-changing moments of my youth.

It sounds like DR Ginny's book sale was the place to be. $6 for a whole bag of books?! Wow.

Although I did not win for best decorated booth or a prize for my chili; it appears that it was only the judges who were unimpressed -

Many  people (including the person who won best booth) said they  thought mine was better - and I was the first one to run out of chili because of the number of people who came back for seconds (and thirds) and the number who came over and said they were told they had to try mine because it was so good.

DR Vixmom I am shocked you did not win for best booth, it really was great.  It is ok for you to say you expected to win.  What about the chili?  Last we left you, you weren't too sure.  After tasting the others did you like yours the best?

Never mind, I see you would have awarded someone else for the chili prize.  I'm still curious how you felt about yours in the end.

I was in standing room at the Met for the first performance of Mahagonny in 1979, one of the great nights in a theatre.  the production was dazzling.  I have never seen so many rich people get offended and walk out of a performance before or since; that opera really is meant to épater le bourgeois, and I would swear the house was half empty by the final great funeral march.

DR Vixmom I loved your booth. Definitely way better than the winning one.  That does not seem right to use the same recipe for 2 years when the judges are the same. I would rather have the people love it. That turkey chili does not really sound appealing to me.

Congrats!
