TOD:
I don't think I saw any foreign language films until I was in college. During my freshman year in the University of Washington Drama Department, my teachers and fellow students were "condemning" American movies and praising all foreign language ones. So, I started going to the Ridgemont Theater which specialized in foreign movies.
I saw a lot of Bergman pictures: WILD STRAWBERRIES, THE MAGICIAN, THROUGH A GLASS DARKLY and, although I admired them, they were not really my cup of tea.
Then, I saw LAST YEAR AT MARIANBAD, which I thought was the biggest piece of s**t I'd ever seen. To me, it looked like the editor threw all the pieces of film into the air, then cut them together in the order than he pulled them out of the pile. That turned me off of foreign films for years.
These days, I'll watch one or two foreign language movies per year, but I really don't enjoy reading subtitles. If I want to read, I'll pick up a book.
