My opinion of MARY POPPINS is that it has one of the most putrid and unmusical orchestrations I have ever heard come from a Broadway pit.  I can think of few shows where the pianists have worked so hard to so little effect.

I have learned two things today (so far):

1.  The additional MARY POPPINS songs are a dud.

2.  The orchestrations are a dud.

Haineshisway.com has thereby just saved me a ton of money!      :)

We visited our new home this morning before leaving.  There were a couple of little rabbits on the lawn outside our window.  The entire area seems to be filled with rabbits :)

TOD

Hootering and hollering and cat calls to show appreciation. I think this has come from all the music reality shows that encourage it. I prefer applause.

I also dislike standing ovations for shows or performers that do not deserve it. It seems that every show and performer get them no matter what.

Things I Miss:
The front curtain that will rise after the overture. Very few shows do it now and I know it's a cost thing, but work it into the budget! Some of magic is gone when you walk into the theater and you already see the set. Imagine if Wicked (A show I am not a fan of) had curtain that rose to reveal that great set!

Ditto and Ditto and Ditto...although here in Olympia, there is only one theater that even has a grand drape, so an actual rising curtain isn't an option for most groups.

If I remember correctly, when I saw the tour of Wicked in Seattle, they did have their curtain down before the show started.

The other REALLY irritating thing in musical theater, at least in Olympia, is that when a couple of theaters have musicals, they have their speaker volume turned up so damped high!  It's like the sound guys can't hear so they have to have the volume up too loud for everyone else.

Wel, I need to go now.  I'm going to go to work and make up a few hours, and then pick up my friend from the airport.  I'll drive her car (it's got a CD player!) so I'll pick that up after work.

Have a good day, all!

Saturday afternoon greetings!  I slept until after 8:30 this morning then had to rush around to get to my hair appointment by 10.  From there I went to do errands and to visit Mom, all in torrential rain showers.  So, my hair-do needs some repair before Richard and I go downtown for the Middletown Historical Society annual dinner tonight.

But Mom was pretty chipper, which is something...

I almost said something about the orchestration of Mary Poppins - they really are dreadful, and the opening short "overture" was so ill played I didn't know what I was listening to.

TOD - unnecessary amplification.  The FORBIDDEN BROADWAY I saw last weekend was done in a very small room in which good singers should be able to project sufficiently.  The sound system just distorted the lyrics and made my ear buzz.

I'm finally up.  Didn't get to sleep until almost three and really not understanding what show dear readers Amy and Mark saw that was only two-and-a-half hours long.  I woke up at eight, fell back asleep until nine, saw that my request to move the Sami session to one was okay, went back to bed, call at ten-thirty asking if we could move the Sami session even later to three, I said yes, fell back asleep and woke up at noon.  I'm sure I somehow got eight hours of sleep during all that time.

Yes, we had a lovely visit with Larry this morning/afternoon. We talked and talked (and we didn't talk about any of you, oddly enough).

He gave us lovely parting gifts (due to the closing of the office).

It's a beautiful Manhattan spring day and we have taken advantage of it.

That's all for now.

Went to Jerry's at one-thirty.  Now, most of you know I go to Jerry's almost daily.  I know the deal.  No one can say I don't know the deal.  And the deal on Saturday is that you can basically go any damn time you like and you'll get right in, ESPECIALLY on Saturday at one damn thirty.  But noooo - this must be National Lunch at One-Thirty Day because there was a damn line out the damn door.  NEVER in my years of Jerry's has that happened on Saturday at one-thirty.  So, I picked up no damn packages and drove to Hugo's - line out the damn door.  So, I drove directly to the Studio Cafe, because one-forty five on a Saturday is ghost town time over there - nooooo, two people ahead of me and jammed.  I said quite simply, "No, I don't need to wait so that I can then give you money."  I gave up after that, which is going to be really unpleasant because I cannot now eat until five at the earliest.

Lunch, what a concept.  Not in LA - not at one-thirty.

Didn't P.L. Travers have it written in her contract that ANY additional songs written for a stage musical version of MARY POPPINS have to be written by British songwriters and that the Sherman Bros. were expressly forbidden to add to the score for the stage?
