"Mr. Rogers" never had a real finale, also. I'd read that he said that kids of the age who watch his show wouldn't understand why everyone is saying goodbye, but then be on again the next day, so his last show was just a regular show.

That's how I think most shows should be. The characters can live on in some alternate universe. While I agree that Mary Tyler Moore or M*A*S*H each had a great finale, there are natural points in the evolution of a long-running series where the writing or story line or loss of an actor creates a sort of close or ending, or network interference. I know that this can only be assessed in hindsight.

Of course, with the purposefully short-series like McGoohan's The Prisoner, it's almost necessary to have a conclusion. But, what I like about that one as well as the two Newhart series, is that they are gordian knots and do not detract from re-viewings.

One recent short-lived show, Magic City, which was told it was shutting down near the end of its second season, pulled off a series finale that tied up its story lines AND was somehow still a good episode otherwise. Of course those of us who liked it would have stood for another season or two, easily.

Then there are the series that don't seem to know how to end, whether it's the loss of interest on part of the creator or network interference. I don't really remember how that surreal show Get a Life ended. Looking back, the first season seems better than the second. I haven't seen that show in a very long time. Interesting that some of the best seasons of Newhart (where he's the proprietor of a Vermont inn), and The Simpsons, link to Get a Life, due to David Mirkin's involvement. I think he added the nth degree of absurdity.

Also, the original Twin Peakswas better in the first season than the second. I think that was due to David Lynch being involved in some other projects and ABC's meddling. The again, ABC's meddling in a proposed Lynch series with Ann Miller led to the movie Mulholland Drive.

I will state something that will be sacrilege for some. I never much cared for Three's Company. The proof for me is that I cannot sit through any reruns. I never found John Ritter funny. Sorry, but he just wasn't for me. I always felt that he was trying too hard to be like Lucille Ball. If you're funny, you're funny. If not, well then to me it seems strained. Naturally, the spin-off series The Ropers and Three's a Crowd, to me were abysmal.

I also was never on the Friends bandwagon. Didn't care about any of the characters. I think it's horrible that CBS has again tried to remake The Odd Couple. I tried to watch one episode. Feh!

I found out last night that today was supposed to be the day that The Midnight Sun (Theater Artists Olympia's performance space) would be getting interwebs (and Wi-Fi) access. I was told (because I'm the TAO treasurer) that the appointment window would be between 1pm and 4pm. Well, it's after 4pm and I wasn't called to be told that they're on their way.
