It's turning into a half-way decent day here, weather-wise.

It's not the weather I'm concerned about here, sing.  ;)

We're having thunder and some rain today.  I finished Disc 3 of Season 1, and now I'm pondering dinner and what to watch tonight.  I need a nap.

I think I like my new comforter, speaking of naps.

We'll find that out this Saturday.

Back from dinner with friends.  I went to their house first and then we went to an Italian restaurant in Centreville, Va.

Watching a "Reba" episode.  I never watched it when it was being produced.  I get a kick out of Barbra-Jean (notice the Streisand-style spelling (that's the way it's spelled according to the credits--I've never seen anyone else spell it that way).

Don't a great poster, but I still want to see this movie. It's supposedly opening in New York and going to on-demand:

I saw Betsy Palmer years ago in a touring production of Gigi years ago with Taina Elg and Louis Jourdan.

Getting ready to watch "The Notorious Landlady," which was a movie I loved as a kid. I hope it holds up. Jack Lemmon, Kim Novac and Fred Astaire. Cast, as least,is great.

I was a bit rude. But man she was driving me crazy with how inconsiderate she was. My sister was sitting in front of her and she left her program on her seat. And this lady thought that it was fine to have her kid sit on the papers and crumple them. When I asked her to not do that she acted like I was in the wrong.

Then throughout the meet she kept getting out of her seat and standing in front of us (blocking our view).

Then finally she decided to stand right up against my niece's seat so she couldn't sit down to eat her muffin. I asked her to move and she turned to me and said, "oh my gosh you are so rude".

I wanted to tell her off so badly. I was a bit rude. But she had no consideration for anyone but herself. I really wanted to give her a list of everything that she had done that had bugged the crap out of me. But I didn't say anything.

I had a disaster of a cooking experiment today. I wanted to make ricotta balls. First, I did not find any recipe that was similar to what my grandmother used to make. Some were for dessert and that's not what we ever ate. That must be some recent invention by a restaurant. We always had what I'd now have to call savory, in that these would be part of a lunch or dinner meal, not a sweet dessert (not for me anyway).

OK, no satisfactory recipe, but I settled on one to try. Second, I had just bought ricotta. Here in Arizona, I have only seen 2 brands, and this was the second brand. I can now say that they both are simulacra ricotta. Based on the ingredients and how they behave as ricotta, these are not real ricotta. Back in New York, I could go to any regular, run-of-the-mill supermarket and could find pretty good cheese, like mozzarella and ricotta. There really should be no more than 4 ingredients (this is also true of cottage cheese). Milk, salt, vinegar and maybe rennet. Once you get into locust bean gum, guar gum, xanthan gum, and other fillers and thickeners, you have stepped away from cheese making and into chemistry lab creations. The proof is in the tasting.

As an example, Daisy brand cottage cheese is much better than most other brands, at least in a regular average Joe supermarket. You will notice a handful of ingredients. That's how it should be. Actually, that's how ice cream should be too. I can no longer eat Breyer's. Once a brand proud of its "all natural" ingredients, they've since cheaped out, and one of the cheapeners makes me physically ill.

So, the cheese I was working with is problematic, but I know of no alternatives (yet). I pressed on. I followed the recipe, and voilà, a tasteless almost inedible product resulted. Unfortunately, also a waste of time, a waste of foodstuffs, a waste of putting the stove on, adding heat to my apartment on a 100 degree day, and a disappointment. Very upsetting.

Now, cue the syrupy strings and I will retreat to a corner.

Well, at least it didn't taste bad? Sorry it failed, but I don't know this dish. Describe a great version of it.

The ricotta balls should be the size of walnuts. The ones my grandmother made would be fried in olive oil, but I've known them to also work baked. Ingredients vary, but for savory ricotta balls, there should be, of course, whole milk ricotta, parmesan and/or romano, garlic, pepper, parsley, salt (if needed), and flavored bread crumbs. Some add a pinch of nutmeg. Egg in some form is an ingredient. This is something that I've seen vary and may be the crux of the problem. Yolk, two yolks, whites, no whites, etc. Since I have celiac, I have to use gluten-free bread crumbs, which I already know is a "handicap" for flavor and I consider it a given, not charging this against my overall impression of the failed cooking experiment today.

The actual result should be nicely flavored fried ricotta balls lightly browned slightly crisp on the outside, nice cheesy inside with a slight cheese melt. When made correctly, these are addictive and make a good appetizer, side dish or snack. Tomato sauce could be used for dipping, which is optional.

THey do sound good.

Did you drain the cheese?

I'll take a look in some of my Italian cookbooks to see if I can find a recipe.
