It's a cool, grey day here in LA. We've been told for weeks now that tomorrow will be much warmer, but it never is. Fine with me--I like cool weather. Given our severe drought, it's best that it NOT be hot.

I've been busy lately with lots of medical and dental appointments--and taxes--and really need some unproductive downtime. Do-nothing time. I'll try for as much of that as I can today.

Back from some bacon and eggs and picking up no packages.  Must try and doze off for a bit, then do some work on the Kritzerland show.  I think I'm just too tired to go to a show tonight.

Learned this morning of the death of Clem Burton, who was our wedding organist.  He also put up with having me in the choir for several years, which was the price he had to pay to have Richard's voice.  I learned more from him in 3 or 4 years than I had in my entire K-12 music education experience and I will always treasure that experience.  Rest in peace, good and faithful servant.

My condolences, Ginny.

I listened this morning to the new GOLDEN APPLE recording.  It's much better than the first performance bootleg I had heard and a lot of performance glitches in lyrics are repaired.  The cast shows more personality on the recording, but I think everyone - even the ones I'd liked on the bootleg - aren't quite good enough, Some are close, but . . .

My biggest problems are choices and changes the conductor made.  Why should he care what the composer wished?

Well, it's nice to know that at least it's not a train wreck that might really turn off everyone from the show.

Mucho Thanks, BK, for the care packet.  You know my penchant for Mr. Herrmann and I'm looking for the all-Kimmel album of Ms. Bainum and the latest installment of Ms. Hofstetter!  Nice to add the latest editions for my ever-growing Kimmel library...almost a whole shelf.

Best. Sleeping. Beauty. Ever.

I've seen 10-15 productions of this ballet on DVD and a live performance around 1995 of the 1990 Maryinsky Company's attempt to reproduce the original 1890 production. The Maryinsky production was the first I'd seen to employ children in the ballet, and this ABT production today was the second. When the Act One "Dance of the Pages" occurs, it was actually danced by 10-16 pages around the age of 10-12, and the kids were also great in the Act Three Hop-O'-My-Thumb dance.  I think there were about 20 children in the ballet.

This was the best production I've seen: great soloists and costumes and scenery reconstructed from Leon Bakst's 1921 London production.  There was one strange costume for the corps de ballet boys in the Finale:knee-length hoop skirts over their tights and boots that looked plain weird.  The orchestra played really well, and the choreography - mostly the original 1890 work of Marius Petipa - had some wonderfully comic moments, but the dramatics were all in place and there was some interesting glimpses of human charity and cruelty I'd never seen in any other production.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~  Financial and insurance vibes for DR cillaliz!  ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
I fell over when you told us the possible costs for rabies treatments!
Thanks for the vibes, it's scary, I know, but when the choice is get the vaccinations and shots or risk rabies and death, you pay.  There is no treatment for rabies once you get it and it's an ugly death
KUDOS to our HHW BATWOMAN, DR Cillaliz!
That must have been terrifying! A bat got into my bedroom when I was living in San Diego
County. I tried to get it to leave, but it wasn't feeling very cooperative. I called a friend to help. It was a very stressful experience. You were very brave and resourceful to use a butterfly net.
Vibes for stress reduction and also for the bills! Sheesh!
Thanks Jeanne
Happiest Birthday to Mr. Sherman!
I've been hearing in my mind's jukebox the Sherman Bros. songs that almost always come to mind: Chitty Chitty Bang Bang, The Wonderful Thing About Tiggers (the way Paul Winchell performed the song), Spoonful of Sugar, It's a Small World, and Feed the Birds. What a wonderfully, truly scrumptious jukebox indeed.
I will be E&T today.  It's off to the big city and meeting up with a few cinema friends for some 3-D hi-jinx at MoMA.  Should be great fun, but it will be a long day.
That sounds like fun. Read about the festival. Makes me wish I were in NY just for that.
I have been at home in bed all day just watching TV and burning DVDs.  I now need to take a shower, shave, and get dressed (in that order) so that I may venture out into the wilds of Olympia for the purpose of either ushering or working concessions.
I had originally signed up to usher for a  choir concert at the Washington Center, but this morning I got an e-mail from the volunteer coordinator asking if I would switch to concessions for an event at South Puget Sound Community College.
Looking at the volunteer sign-up website, they have one concessionaire, but it's not difficult for one person to handle concessions at SPSCC.  However, they only have two ushers signed up, when they want eight!  I e-mailed the volunteer coordinator that I could do either concessions or ushering at either venue.  Now, I'm just waiting to hear back where I am wanted...but I need to get ready.
Have a good rest of the day, all!
There's a song in there. Perhaps: Au Contraire, Concessionaire, Savoir Faire.
An unanticipated fireworks accident happened just now not far from our home. James and Jeanie Agnew were having a fun time with their friends and relatives until the sudden explosion occurred.
They managed to put the fire out safely, now the kids won't even come out of the rooms. Before the explosion occurred we spent quality time with each other and everything pretty well went the way we wanted it to go. That explains it all!
I arrived at about 12:30 and I will be there from now to Monday, then the kids have to go back to school. Then I have to go back to my place and get ready to go to a interview in Big Falls. It's way too far of a drive, but I have to do it.
I'm about to play a wonderful tune on my 30 year young electric guitar, sorta like a little gig but the kiddy giddy version, I guess. The kids can feel free to jam if they want. Like they can play a wee bit of guitar too. I consider myself to be a guitar god.
I nicknamed myself Goddes Guitar for when we go out for a gig or two. Usually instead of having the guitar singing or just a singing guy we make the drummer sing. It never works out so I end up having to sing it, so guess who the default singer is?
Just a curious question, are/were any of you in a band at one point of time.
Just found a website that might be helpful for the insomniacs here: an earplug superstore. Neither of the two styles of earplugs I've tried were comfortable and I'd never seen any other styles, but this store has LOTS. Plus white noise machines.
Speaking of noise, there was a manila envelope taped onto the Noisy Neighbors' door yesterday, with the apartment manager's handwriting on it. Eviction papers, I'm hoping.
