I live in an apartment, so you rarely find air conditioners in apartments. More and more people are getting air conditioning out here, but it is very rare for us to have this much hot weather so early in the summer. I never understood the appeal of American football. At least in soccer, the action never (or rarely) stops. The 90 minute game doesn't take three (or more) freakin' hours. And in American football, the commentary just never stops! They drone on and on and on about nothing I understand, nor care.

But that's just me.

Well, I am now the owner of four brand new Michelin tires! I'm glad I got in as early as I did (about 1:00 pm). They said that it would take about an hour and a half because it was the last day of the sale, but I didn't get my car until about 3:45 pm! I walked to Taco Del Mar for a burrito and chips and queso, then I walked back to Costco and was able to get a new screw for my eye glasses. Last night, one of the screws that holds the lenses fell out and I couldn't find it. Fortunately, Costco replaces them for free.

After I finally got my car back with my new tires, I came home and took a nap. I was so tired just from the heat. My place is kind of warm, but not (yet) horribly so. I have some ice water, but will need to refill in a few minutes.

We paid $7.99 for a pound of cherries at the Oxbow Market in Napa, CA, on Tuesday. Yesterday at Kroger here in Middletown similar cherries were $1.99/pound.

Yesterday we escaped the heat and went to Cannon Beach on the coast. We were actually cold while watching the fireworks, from a cliff overlooking the ocean. It was lovely and and interesting view. We could see fireworks going off at various locations down the coast line.

Best of all there was barely any traffic as we drove back to town.

Hello everyone from recuperation land. I haven't been up to snuff so I have been an E & T DR. I am recovering but it isn't as easy as it sounded going in. I'm reminded that the surgery lasted 7 hours and a lot of work had to be done to reconstruct my abdominal muscles and extra mesh having been used. I'm still on a (yecch) liquid diet and it feels like I've lost lots of weight. I'm still wearing an abdominal binder, which is an awful way to keep your figure.

I've been weaning myself off the painkillers. Oxycodone sure makes it easy to sleep, but the side effects aren't worth it. Flexeril is right next to it. I'm just never going to be a pill-popper I guess. I really hate taking pills. The only pill worth having on standby is Zofran which helps stave off the many instances of nausea I've had to deal with.

Tomorrow I see the surgeon, my fiery Argentinian bariatric expert. He actually did me a favor by calling an audible and changing the surgery from robot assisted to all human hands. That's why it took so long. That's why my recovery is slower too. My taste buds have changed. Everything tastes too sweet. I can't have anything carbonated. I panicked the other day and ordered a whole bunch of baby food, but I jumped the gun. I'm still on a liquid diet. I haven't made it officially to the puree stage.

At least my surgeon did what he did, otherwise I would have yet another surgery. If I underwent just robotic repair of my quite involved hernia, I would have been left with an empty flap. That would have necessitated plastic surgery. I'm not a fan of too much surgery. Being put under too many times is too stressful for the body.

I'm hoping that tomorrow I will have more things removed like staples and the like. I can't bear the thought of eating, even though I have flashes of hunger. Even Jello is yucky right now. I have to cut all of the fruit juices with water. All I notice is how sweetened everything is. Who knows maybe this is the turning point in my life where I finally part ways with Pepsi. Even the "unsweetened" stuff is too sweet. I guess it takes this kind of drastic change to realize these things.

My body clock is all over the place. I have to sit up for periods of time to avoid pneumonia, but I don't feel that comfortable with the binder. I am limited in what I can do. I can't lift anything heavier than 2 pounds, so there's not really any chance of straightening the apartment. My friends have been helping when they can, but it's hard to see the dust settle around you.

My other friends may come visit in a week of two. She's had to take care of her nephew, and inherited a little Chihuahua. When I'm fit for duty, they want me to meet this little dog. Maybe she'll be a good companion. She's not the stereotypical small dog. She is a love bug and cuddles, but never gets all nervous and yappy.

I was considering a cat. I miss Minny, but he's got the sweet life on the farm. My friends are worried that the small dog isn't fitting in since she is so tiny compared to the hulking Shepherd dogs. The large female seems to want to actually eat this little dog. I'll see what happens when I meet the dog. I have a way to go yet.

On a totally different track, yesterday the local classical station played "American" music for the Independence Day holiday. I had heard of Peter Boyer, but it was the first time I consciously heard something he wrote. I'm not sure. He definitely comes out of film orchestration school. His pieces have a definite deja-vu, or deja-heard. There's talent there, but I guess I haven't heard enough. My first impression was that of a pastiche of all the bombast of John Williams, Jerry Goldsmith and Bernard Herrmann strung out on a Copland scaffold. Those are composers to emulate, but I'm still not sure. I hate to make such judgments because I don't have real qualifications. Sometimes I feel like I am speaking out of turn. But that was the one remarkable 4^th item for me.

Dear Bruce, you were an unexpected visitor yesterday cheering me up in the form of Howard Krump on the cruise to Mazatlan, or something. I'm glad you stopped by.

It's great to hear about James Karen. He's been one of my favorite actors all my life. In NY, we loved him as the Pathmark Supermarket man for so many years. He's always been one of my pro- arguments for being a character actor, if that term is still okay to use, as opposed to a lead. Mr. Karen also has a great speaking voice, in my opinion, and I have always wanted to meet him. Even when he plays a heavy, there's a twinkle in his eye that lets us know that he knows he's having fun. Maybe that's what I like is that I've always understood his fun in his work, whether he was in Hercules in New York, a living dead movie, episodic TV or commercials, or Poltergeist.

Thank you Bruce and thank you Mr. Karen for lifting my spirits during my recovery.
