MORE RESTAURANT RUMINATIONS

Well, you've read the notes, the notes had ruminations, and now it is time for you to post until the ruminating cows come home.

Well I am thinking he will get to come home today or tomorrow.  No updates, but he is not worse....so I think he's getting better.

We shall see.

Good morning, all!  The bizarre dreams were back in full force last night: there were several I've now forgotten, but the last was another long Drama Book Shop-related one, something about going in late for work, living in a huge apartment with several people, and a large quantity of frozen food someone forgot to put in the freezer and worried me about its still being edible.

And there was a cell phone i could not navigate.

It's very quiet in the apartment this morning: Time Warner television service is out so I have no idea what is going on in the world.  Hopefully, it will be up and running by the time I am home from Columbia.

I have two business dealings to address this morning before I go: the inertia of Office Depot in issuing a refund for that damaged table and why Fed Ex takes so damned long to invoice their customers.  I may issue a complaint against Kritzerland over the fact that it's the only vendor who has yet to send me a CD in a damaged jewel case.

Nice to hear that Paul Williams requested the videos.

I went to a similar (not really, but sort of) tribute to him in NYC some years back, which he attended and even took part in a little bit.  He sang a couple of songs (using his own accompanist) and talked and reminisced for a bit to a very receptive crowd.  A unique and entertaining guy.

TOD:
I really don't like to cook, especially since it's difficult to cook in small portions. But mostly I don't like cleaning up a lot of dishes. So, I'm always on the hunt for things I can make in one dish. Of late, I've been taking Trader Joe's 3-minute brown rice and putting about 3/4 of a cup in a cereal bowl with a couple frozen turkey meatballs and a lot of pre-chopped broccoli. I put it in the microwave for three minutes, and then drizzle some soy sauce on it. It's actually quite good.
I also make something called "morning rice" which consists of a cup of Uncle Ben's 10-minute brown rice (uncooked), 1 1/2 chopped apples, 3 tablespoons of honey, and about 1/2 cup dried cranberries (or raisins). I boil the rice and mix in all the rest of the ingredients. I then split it up into six disposable plastic containers, put them in the refrigerator, and take one to work every morning.

Here's a somewhat offbeat listing of L.A. restaurant memories and half-memories for a few of you to mull over:

First, some coffee shops whose names are unknown but I have nice memories of a few visits:

The one (Greek-owned or named?) in the same block -- and destroyed in the same fire -- as M'Goo's on Hollywood Blvd.
One on the north side of Franklin near Wilcox (early '70s).
East side of Robertson around Third or Alden or maybe up near Melrose (late '80s).
North side of Wilshire near Doheny, in the first floor of an office building, which we thought might have been a Stats (mid '70s).
South side of Wilshire in Westwood, first floor of a building between the Federal Building near the 405 and Westwood Blvd. (late '70s).

Johnny's Steak House on Hollywood Blvd., just east of the House of Pies at Whitley.  I think it had a less than stellar reputation, but for me it was a part of the incredible and lively landscape of the Boulevard.  Early '70s.

New York George, way east on Fountain Ave. -- I see it's now something else entirely, but I remember going down there a few times and eating a weekend breakfast on the patio whilst pursing the Calendar and View sections of the Sunday L.A. Times.  So-so food, but enjoyable.  Late '80s.

Nibbler's Restaurant, north side of Wilshire in the Hancock Park district, maybe near the Carnation Building (?).  Again, on the first floor of a commercial building (the one at S. Hudson looks possible).  Late '80s.

The Bratskellar in Westwood, which I only ate in once or twice in 1972-73.  I loved it, but all I remember is that whatever I had was some kind of sweet-and-sour type of chicken or beef dish that was very yummy.

And with that, I must be off.  Will think about this some more.  Sometimes the vague memories are just as enjoyable as the solid ones.

You may or may not know that Major League Baseball's All Star Game is being played tonight in Cincinnati.  Tune in on Fox tonight and you may see some nice Queen City scenery - if it doesn't blow away in the storms that are predicted for this afternoon...
