Earlier this year, following a request from a Facebook friend, I helped a British high school boy with his composition and orchestration. Tonight I am meeting my Facebook friend and his son the composer, who graduated with honors, for dinner before they see On The Town. The trip to New York was a graduation gift.

Nice!  Enjoy the dinner and the company, Larry!

My adopted son Joshie is back from his jaunt to Vienna, Budapest, and Prague, and I may see a play, The Weir, at the Irish Rep with him tomorrow.

Hope you enjoy that as well!  I saw a production of "The Weir" in Tacoma, directed by my friend Pug, who's the artistic director of Theater Artists Olympia.  It was a very good production.

I know nothing about the play beyond it's being ghost stories, but i had wanted to see it when it played in NYC several years ago.

For your viewing pleasure -- a series of unrelated but stunning (very related, if you share the longing for the civilization of the early 1960s that I do) professional b&w photos of NYC back in the day:

Someone posted this link on the Home Theater Forum in a thread about SPARTACUS, which is why it opens to that shot.  There's a LOT more there.

DR John G. - do you find it difficult to use your CPAP mask when your allergies are at their worst?

I find it impossible. Even with the Benedryl, sometimes my nostrils won't open enough for the air pressure to work. And I have a BiPap, which supposedly adjusts to your breathing abilities.

Lovelier still!

Nice to have a job and some income.  I figure it will essentially cover the costs of the Ohio trip: cars to and from LaGuardia, expenses in Ohio, and possibly a new suit.

Excellent news.

TOD:

CD: Mama, I Want to Sing; Starmites

Car CD: Some book about food and eating psychology. It's fairly interesting but I have forgotten the name.

DVD: Maybe I'll get around to the Last Five Years.

John (and anyone else), have you heard about this Indiegogo campaign?:

Airing: the first hoseless, maskless, micro-CPAP.

The campaign is finished, but I'm sure that it's just the beginning for this product.

Back from conforming tracks and then some lunch - had a mediocre egg salad and bacon sandwich.  No jogging until this evening, as it's currently over 100 degrees outside.

I had a really great session listening to some Kenton LPs.  The ones I had here are:  Road Show (w/June Christy and the Four Freshmen, live in concert at Purdue U. in Indiana), Kenton - Wagner (the Mobile Fidelity remastering of the Capitol), the previously discussed West Side Story, and one on London Phase 4, Stan Kenton Today - Recorded Live in London.  The two live concert albums are 2-record sets, and they are a revelation insofar as showing what this band could do in performance.  Absolutely astounding.  And all of these are brilliant renditions of brilliant music.  Amazing, really.

Phase 4 albums were always a crap shoot -- you either got something deliciously ear filling, or just a lot of overblown juiced-up effects.  I listened to a few tracks and this one's a winner in my book.

Sadly, the fifth in my collection, the iconic Kenton in Hi-Fi, was a copy I had never cleaned or properly auditioned, and after said cleaning and said auditioning, I'm afraid it's going into the thrift shop stack for someone else to enjoy.  (And someone will.  It's not unlistenable, and the brilliance of the recording is totally evident over the surface abuse -- but its condition is below that which I can enjoy having in Ye Olde Collection.)

I only found one Shearing album, a live performance with Peggy Lee and the Shearing Quintet at the National Disc Jockey Convention in Miami in 1959.  It's a winner, but as the only Shearing in the house, it's awfully lonely.  Something will have to be done about that.

Album title is Beauty and the Beat.

Hello from the retreat center. Festivities don't start until dinner at 6:00pm - then, we have a two-hour choir rehearsal. It is situated beautifully beside a small lake and also the very scenic St. Croix river, which separates Minnesota from Wisconsin.

The device looks interesting, DR George. But it might not work for someone who sleeps with their mouth open - that is why I need a mask that covers both my nose and my mouth.
