Topic of the Day:

I don't think my parents ever had any cast recordings when I was growing up.  I discovered musicals through friends in school and choir.  My parents did have a couple of soundtracks to movie musicals..."My Fair Lady" and "The Sound of Music."  Those are the only ones that I can remember.

Good morning, all!

Another night of very strange dreams. I remember none of them now.

DR TCB, I read Mozart in the Jungle, and i gather the TV series has a very different tone. People I know who have seen the series have enjoyed it.  My memory of the book is its unflattering/frank depiction of life at the North Carolina School for the Arts.

The Pope's imminent arrival has Manhattan in a frenzy. I am very happy I will be spending my time around the apartment and neighborhood during his stay.

We watched Mozart in the Jungle, and enjoyed it as entertainment. It's a bit over the top, including Bernadette. But still enjoyable. It's not very realistic in terms of its depiction of the classical music business.

TOD:

I grew up living in suburban Connecticut, just over a hour from NYC by train, and my father worked in Manhattan. My mother would often go in, meet my father after work, and they'd go see a musical. And sometimes, not long after, the LP would appear on the shelf. How I used to love poring over the Playbills the morning after each of these outings!

There were many LPs, but the ones I remember most are The King and I, Carousel, and Company. And all the classical stuff - but that's not the TOD.

Glad that everything worked out for bk, computer-wise. Those "ransom" bombs are, indeed, quite scary. And it sounds like you got competent, friendly, and helpful assistance - which is nice to hear, and altogether rare these days.

Just finished listening to all the sound samples for the Welcome to My World cast album. They sound great, and Sami sounds great. And I really really like the songs, from what I have heard so far. Can't wait to give this a spin!

TOD:

There were so many cast albums in our house.  My mother loved Broadway shows, so one was always on the record player.

MY FAIR LADY
THE MUSIC MAN
CAMELOT
KISS ME KATE
SOUTH PACIFIC
DAMN YANKEES
FANNY

etc., etc. etc.

BK,

That story about the Apple scam is scary.  Indeed, being a Mac person, I've taken notes from you blog on how to fix it.

We've been getting constant phone calls from people saying that we have a problem on our computer(s) and they will fix it if we give them access.  All the callers have a foreign accent, and we hang up on them.

Be careful what you "click: on.

Good morning, all.

A pretty solid sleep, culminating in one of my typically crazy dreams involving twenty-year-old work and people situations seamlessly merged with present day situations.  Glad to be out of it.  Out, damned spot.  Good riddance.

TOD

It was my uncle whose cast album of THE MUSIC MAN was the first I was ever aware of.  I didn't really know what a musical was, but I loved the sound of it and would ask him to put it on when at their house.  I don't know why he had it at that time because he wasn't a musical lover or theater-goer at all, to my knowledge.  But he did have reason to be in NYC along with my dad a year or two later, and they took the opportunity to see the show - in standing room.

My mom and dad had seen SOUTH PACIFIC on an early trip to NYC after Martin and Pinza were out of it.  They didn't get the album, but several years later after we saw the movie (which is what introduced me to what a musical actually was), I had to have a recording.  The first SOUTH PACIFIC they brought home was a cheap no-name one from the grocery store or some such, but I spent hours in front of that thing getting the music into my head as best I could, always attempting to relive the magic.

Finally -- FINALLY -- they got a console stereo to replace the crappy little record player, joined the Columbia Record Club, and, in competition with my dad's Mitch Miller albums, I voted on the cast album of SOUTH PACIFIC to be in an early shipment.  It's my guess that that was the first real cast album in the house.

My sister gave me The Sound of Music for Christmas.  I believe I was 11, maybe 12.  At the time I had not heard of it.

I can't remember which version of The Music Man my parent's had but I'm guessing it was the stage.

We were pretty broke most of the time I was growing up, but my mother loved shows.  We did have the original cast albums of "South Pacific," "Annie Get Your Gun," "My Fair Lady,"  "Flower Drum Song"  and a bargain bin cast recording of "Kiss Me Kate" (which was actually quite good) which all became a big part of my childhood.  The soundtracks of "Gypsy," "Music Man, " "Sound of Music" and "Unsinkable Molly Brown" later made their way into the stack.

TOD:

I'm not sure if the albums my parents had were Broadway cast recordings or movie musical recordings. But they only had three:
The Sound of Music
Fiddler on the Roof
West Side Story

My mother was never a big music fan and my dad mostly had Mozart and Tchaikovsky albums. Anyway, remembering what the covers looked like, I believe Fiddler was a cast recording and Sound of Music and West Side Story were from the movies. I loved them all.
