Seventeen years ago on the day of the Alamo Bowl, I came to San Antonio on a job interview that was rather surreal. I was sick with a fever and remember reading a good chunk of John Irving's Son of a Circus on the plane ride in. The circus part seemed somewhat apt.

I couldn't breathe through my nose, so I really couldn't taste the food at the interview lunch, which was at a busy River Walk place, overrun in a sea of purple and yellow, the main colors of the two teams that year. I had never been to San Antonio before and had no clue about the River Walk or anything other than the Alamo. There were three women interviewing me, one of whom had the great idea that I should review the meal as part of the working interview. There was another option, which I chose instead. I don't remember what that was, but I do remember writing an article on the fly about a Portuguese soup that features plenty of garlic and is used to fight whatever ails you. I was desperate for a bowl of that.

I had to suffer through a bad Italian meal that night before I was dropped off at a noisy airport hotel in which I could not get the thermostat set higher as I had developed the chills. I couldn't sleep much that night and just sort of slunk off the next morning thinking that the whole trip had been a mistake.

I somehow got the job and have been in San Antonio ever since.

When my dad was in the army, he was stationed in San Antonio for about a year.  I was probably three to four years old.  I know we moved to Germany from San Antonio when I was four.

My only visit to San Antonio was 33 years ago this month for ALA Midwinter.  That was one of the few times ALA was smart enough to have our winter conference someplace warm.  This time I'll be in Boston for it...

Kaiserslautern.  I went to kindergarten and first grade there.  We moved to Ft. Carson, Colorado during the summer before I started second grade.

Ha!

And last year I was in Chicago for the big Super Bowl blizzard.

So far, the 10-day forecast for Boston looks OK.  And I'm paying a little extra to stay in the hotel that's connected to the convention center by an enclosed walkway.

I don't know what I did or why I needed to atone for it, but "Tunnel of Love" is over. It is truly a movie whose time has past, if it ever had one.

Why were you watching it if it was so terrible?
