If I'm up early I'll go have coffee with Mike Huckabee.  I won't ever vote for him, but don't see any reason not to drink coffee with him.   I'm really enjoying meeting as many candidates as possible.

I truly envy you.... Maybe in 4 years I will, invite myself to visit you

Three days until the competition. My, how time flies when your feet are turning to lead and your mind is blank.

I am extremely uncomfortable with the idea of DR vixmom driving in what is looking to be a really significant storm.

You and me both.   I am having grave misgivings
Don't risk it.  If you can go early that's the best.

I'd be happy to have you come. It's really a great experience. People here really take it seriously and are very well versed on the issues.  The differences between the candidates and the parties are clear.   If you did come, we could road trip to some small towns where you are literally there in a coffee shop with  20 other people having a discussion with someone who could be the next president.  Pretty cool when you think about it.  You get a real sense for who they are as people and who has a good sense of humor. You have to have one with the conditions they are tromping through day in and day out

Question for BK:

Bruce, I've never known anyone to write so fast. Do you enjoy that pace or, given fewer projects, would you prefer to take it more leisurely?

I do enjoy the pace.  I didn't write this this quickly because of other projects - it just came pouring out of me plus it was really fun.  It's funny to look back from the beginning - the first book took nine months, the second six, the third four.  The fourth took ten weeks, the fifth probably eight.  Starting with the Hofstetter books, I was doing them in six weeks, then four.  The astonishing ones were the two memoirs because those are over double the length of the other books and yet the first one took just under four weeks and the second one took three weeks - because those came pouring out.  And then there was the year two books came out - the second being the short story collection.

And when it nears the end, the celebs come to town backing a candidate, the candidates go after each other and it's totally insane.  Young people will be standing on the corners jumping up and down waving signs for their candidate. People are knocking on your door, the phone is ringing off the hook, every one is talking issues and politics everywhere you go. Last time I walked into my usual coffee shop to get my morning cup of coffee and was surrounded by the national media who streamed in the door. The Newt Gingrich and his wife came in and sat at our table and talked. The national media are a kick to watch,  you can't help but get the fever, and we're all a little like NASCAR fans watching to see if someone is going to crash before caucus day.  Then, on caucus day, unlike elections, the campaigning goes on during the caucus until finally the vote is counted.   The next day....they are all long gone and we watch from the wings to see who will win in the end.  We take it seriously, go see them, listen and participate but it's insane. You'd love it.

No, more fun to guess. And the DRs will give you some good leads for other stories. As Chas? already did.

That does sound fun and exciting. I had a taste of it at a Fourth of July event in Delaware many years ago. The friends I was with were good friends of Joe Biden and happily introduced me. Delaware is such a small state that it's easy to get to know your politicians.

Vixmom, I'm not sure this would help, but do you know about the auto train to Florida? When I as moving, I drove from Alexandria to someplace about an hour south, where my car and I boarded the auto train. It was snowing lightly. You're in a real train and can get up and move around. So much easier than driving! We got off in Sanford (?), FL and I drove the rest of the way to Palm Coast.

I realize that the issue for you is getting past NY and Washington, but maybe there's an easier way.

DR Jeanne I don't recall you taking a train.  What a great option.  In this case I think they should leave Thursday evening and go as far as possible.  Of course it isn't the best option if they are too tired to drive.

The new book has something in common with one of the previous books, a link of sorts.

I lived in Alexandria for twenty years and didn't know about the auto train until my real estate agent mentioned it at almost the last minute. I love train travel--don't like flying or driving--and it was soooo much better than driving all the way. I highly recommend it. Unfortunately, it isn't always an option.
