Another Thursday.

My doctor called me just before 4 p.m. yesterday and changed more prescriptions.  So, I went to the pharmacy to pick them up. Once home, I hauled everything out and threw out the old and replaced with the new.

I was very tired last night and decided to lie down on my bed around 7:30 p.m.  Woke up at 12:34 a.m.  Went back to bed and woke up at 5:36 a.m.

I'm blaming my new meds cocktail for the sudden attack of sleepiness.   Will know the truth of it today as I proceed here at work.  Thus far, I feel fine.

I'm hoping (against hope?) that my CD of "Sun Valley Serenade" will await me in my mailbox at home this evening.  I'm so jealous of everyone who has gotten his or hers.

I'm also a bit concerned about a replacement 1099-R from the Department of Veterans Affairs.  It was ordered a week ago Monday.  Received an e-mail late Monday afternoon (March 21) saying my request had been processed.  I thought that meant it has been mailed.

You wouldn't know it, though, given the sluggish mail delivery we've been experiencing recently here in Oakland CA.

Tomorrow is fool's day.

Who will be making fools of us, I wonder?  Will we fall for whatever is put forth?

DR vixmom, I'm reporting you to the truant officer for playing hooky today.

You'd better have a signed note on you just in case.

DR Tom....because I was reading without context, I thought your wish for "something with a big trunk" might have been you wishing euphemistically...

Glad to know it's a vehicle, though.

I just took a little break skimming through reaction to "1776" on the chat boards.  It's positively amazing what people will get hung up on sometimes, to the detriment of their own appreciation for the whole.  Lots of pros and cons on this one!

Casting, costuming, direction, it all comes under fire among the raves which are plentiful as well.  I'm very interested in what the reviews have in store.

One very interesting thing to me is several people commenting on the volume of the orchestra.  It did indeed seem a bit low in comparison to that of the last several productions I've seen.  I don't refer to the playing, but to the engineered balance which always seems very controlled but well executed at Encores!  Specifically, at the two shows last year for which I heard the rehearsal in the beautiful tight acoustics at the studio, all that wonderful power was there as well at City Center.  In "1776" that power was likewise magnificent in the studio, but seemed a bit too controlled last night.  Again, I don't mean their playing at all, just the amplification levels balancing orchestra and vocals.  Vocals were fine.

DR Elmore - if you think I'm off base in this critique, just say so.  I might not have even ventured to mention it if I hadn't seen that others had the same reaction.

What's really amusing is misinformation about the orchestrations, for which DR Elmore's corrections are a breath of fresh air.  It seems that Mr. Viertel's remarks may have left things a little unclear, complicated by wrong or incomplete information in the Suskin book.

TOD:
I have to say piano too. I just love the sound of it and it even sounds good played all by itself. I've never been as big a fan of horns or strings individually - I have to hear them played all together to sound good.
I'd like to play the guitar too.
And drums or any percussion instrument look like an awful lot of fun. Unfortunately, I have a terrible sense of rhythm. I don't think I could even play the tambourine well.

Oy.  Can I choose more than one?  I look around me these days and see people -- not just pros, but local friends who dived into multiple instruments back when the diving was good for them -- and I very much wish I'd worked on at least a couple of others.

In high school for some reason I became interested in flute and piccolo, borrowed same from a friend who wasn't using hers at the time, picked up a fingering chart, figured out how to get a sound out of the damned thing, and played around with that for quite a while.  Haven't touched one since, and probably couldn't make a sound on it now to save my life, but to this day I can think through the fingering of something I'm hearing.

Prior to that, I became infatuated with drums, bought a cheapo set, and took some lessons.  That lasted about as long as the flute, and I didn't go very far with technical proficiency, but I'll bet you if I sat down at a set right now, the basic four-limb coordination for basic rhythms would still be accessible.

I've never had the slightest affinity for strings.  I have the ability to pick up an instrument and hand it to its owner without breaking anything, but that's as far as that goes.  So, this leaves us with winds and brass, and I would still love to just get familiar with a few such things.  Which won't do the world any good at all, so let's not push it...

I'm up because  these (I cannot type the word I would like to) have been doing the most relentless hammering I've ever heard - thankfully I fell asleep before one so I at least got about seven hours - it sounds like one jerk up there - I think they're putting the roof on, but you have never heard anything like it in your life.

I've heard from inside sources that the problem is the  sound person on this show.  it's not the ever-reliable Scott Lehrer who knows how to make an orchestra sound great and natural. The orchestra has to be miked because of their position on stage.  all the real sound gets lost in the flies.

Tonight, our local PBS station (KQED) is airing the San Francisco Opera Company's 2013 production of "Show Boat" (with Bill Erwin as Captan Andy).

I have my DVR set to record it.

Thursday afternoon greetings!  I helped Fr. Richard set up for his clergy study group, then made myself scarce this morning.  Visited the book sale site, where they finally allowed me in, to pick up a generous supply to bookmarks for us to hand out at First Friday tomorrow.  I looked around a bit and we have a great selection, beautifully organized.  Sale opens a week from tonight.  From there I went to Java Johnny's to meet a grantwriter friend for lunch.  She's someone who used to attend my programs at the Dayton library and who worked at the hospital where I was treated for my heart attack.  She just started working at our local Miami University campus.  Got home in time to say HI to the clergymen before their meeting ended.

I really enjoyed a lot of that production. But it's Show Boat. And I'm just a sucker for that show.
