Well, you've read the notes, the notes stumbled but did NOT sext, and now it is time for you to post until the stumbling and sexting cows come home - they're off doing Snapchat and sending udder shocking photos.

We got a light dusting.  A feathery light dusting.  It's mostly on the tree branches, very little on the ground, and none on the driveway or sidewalks.  Whew!

But the winds are crazy.  And though the sky is quite bright, I could swear I just heard hail hitting the house again.  I imagine some of last night's hail is still in evidence on the deck.

I have but an hour or so to sit on my bloomin' arse, and then I must go out into the world and play several hours of auditions -- whereupon I will have had quite my fill of that for a while.

DR vixmom, I'm happy you got home safely, and I'm happy you enjoyed the show.  I guess the contemporary clothing didn't bother you?  A lot of the biggest laughs yesterday afternoon came from all the jokes about Congress that are still true today.  I do quibble about Abigail's LL Bean look, since I believe - bot do not know for certain - that she was not out plowing and running that farm without indentured servants or fieldhands of some sort.  I think I'd like to read her letters to John Adams.

I see a new edition of Abigail's letters was published last month with over 100 unpublished ones added, but I think "Dearest Friend" is the one I want.

If that's the farm in the cover photo, she wasn't running it alone.

I'd be happy to read that myself.

This also made me want to watch the HBO John Adams mini-series again.

Playing auditions is a thankless task, except for the pay, with long stretches of boredom punctuated by moments of sheer terror.  As with Mitchum in "The Night of the Hunter", one has a L-O-V-E / H-A-T-E relationship with the hapless souls coming in hoping to make it big.  We L-O-V-E the ones who set "Oh What a Beautiful Morning" before us, and wish the others, with their poor copies of Sondheim and Jason Robert Brown that have to be sightread, a swift removal from this earth.

Elmore, did you ever watch the John Adams miniseries with Laura Linney and Paul Giamatti?

I've heard another pianist say the same. He played sort of a rumbling vamp and then applied it to four or five JRB songs.

A little secret I discovered about sightreading JRB:  If you have a moment in which to figure out and master the pattern (or gimmick) of accompaniment at the beginning of a song, you can fake your way through the whole damned thing, because what you see there is pretty much what you get.

Sadly, there is no secret that will ease your way through a Sondheim piece you don't know.  :)

It's weird, though.  I played The Last Five Years several years ago, but twice recently someone has brought in a song excerpt from it, and in a few places it was like I'd never seen the son of a bitch before.

Preparing for the auditions - I have to go and set up the room.  Because it is not very warm, we'll have to be in the rehearsal center.  This means less room for everything.  And of course since every teenager brings two friends with her to auditions, seating is limited.....

The heater just kicked in here. It shouldn't do that two days after it was 90 degrees.
