So, I got a text from my sister yesterday saying that her ex-husband (and father to her daughter) died. He was 52 years old and had some pretty serious medical issues (his own father died in his 60s and also had some serious medical issues). He and my niece (his oldest daughter) were estranged, mainly because he was an evangelical conservative christian and my niece is an out lesbian athiest. He had another daughter with his third wife, now widow. I don't know how they are doing.

I don't feel a loss because he hasn't been in my life for many years. My niece does have a good emotional support system, so she'll be taken care of.

Celebrated a friend's birthday tonight with her and her husband. Made some pumpkin dumplings that need a little bit of work, but I think I have the idea of what to do to make them a little better (a little more salt, a little hot chile). The fresh pumpkin was wonderful.

Their backyard is incredible. They have bee hives as well as more than a dozen types of roses. And he grows the most incredible array of herbs and vegetables. His cabbages and brussels sprouts are gorgeous. His parsley plants are the size of shrubs. His citrus trees were in full bloom, and the fragrance was intoxicating.

Watching a movie called Burnt with Bradley Cooper as a chef. It's one flat cliche after another. It's not hard to see why the movie flopped. The actors, including Uma Thurman and Emma Thompson, are all phoning it in, except for the reliably interesting Alicia Vikander. At least so far.

So far, a 30 minutes into the movie, we haven't really had many food shots. What's the point/>

Yes, I'll finish, but it feels more like work than enjoyment.
