The reading went really well - I really fixed act two I must say - it's still a bit long - must take out at least five minutes. There's one song that was on the verge of being cut after the first read through but I kept it, wrote a little speech before it, and hoped that would clarify its intention and make it easier to "get" - well, one minute into it tonight and we all knew it had to go. So, happily I had a song waiting in the wings - a Sherman Brothers song that no one's ever heard about Christmas in LA - it's much better for that slot and is short and sweet and fun. In the very long monologue Doug wrote, which he himself read tonight, he knew it was still too long and we already both pretty much agreed on two nice lifts that will bring it down by a minute or so, which will really be helpful. I was concerned about how the end of act two would play, structure-wise - there's a very long sequence, which is monologues and a song interspersed throughout them - it's called We Look Ahead and is about the gay culture in LA from the very bad days of the 1960s right up to now - Doug did a beautiful job creating a character for the sequence, whose story we follow and Robert Yacko read it so beautifully. It's a very powerful number that ends with the full cast doing an anthem like ending. The concern was it's not the end of the show, nor can it be. But I made a really audacious choice to follow it with the Bruce Vilanch sketch and it worked like a DREAM. The sketch is VERY funny, just one nice laugh after another, and then that's followed by what really is the final song of the show, which works perfectly.
