I didn't meet him, but I was around when he came to Cleveland to guest conduct. I remember sitting in on at least one rehearsal at Severance Hall when he took the Cleveland Orchestra through the Prologue to Boito's MEFISTOFELE. I'd listened to the Toscanini recording featuring - what else? - The Robert Shaw Chorale, over and over and over, and boy, was that a treat.
Haven't listened to many of his Atlanta recordings, but I liked his CARMINA BURANA quite a bit.
