Today is composer Charles Strouse's birthday, and here's one of my favorite tracks from BK's album of Strouse songs with Devil Child Jason Graae:

Well, I will be pretty scarce today.  I must get ready for my first dress rehearsal tonight, and schlep the equipment up to the theater in the woods.

TOD - All through my reading of BK's notes, I was sure the TOD was going to have something to do with our favorite independent bookstores (present, or most likely, past).  So that's what I'm going to talk about and I guess the Beatles' Paperback Writer would fit best as my answer to his actual question.

In the late 1970s, my mother and her friend Madelon worked in a Little Professor bookstore in Northville, Michigan, owned by Detroit newscaster Jack LeGoff and his wife.  When they decided to close the store, Mom and Madelon opened Bookstall on the Main in 1979.  As you can see in the photo, it was tiny.  Mom said it had the dimensions of a Greyhound bus - 8 feet wide and 40 feet long.  Small, but mighty - they had a fabulous selection, a delightful kids' room in the back, special order service, and author events.

Eventually, my Mom and Dad bought Madelon's share and ran the business together until word came that Border's would be opening a superstore a few miles away.  The Bookstall was up for sale when my Dad died in August of 1984 and it eventually sold in 1985.  The new owner moved it to a much bigger corner location, but did not stay in business long.

DR Ginny, I know I met your mother but I cannot remember when.

Mom and Dad were here for "You're a Good Man, Charlie Brown."  And another time, she and I stopped in at the AIM building when you were conducting some sort of improve workshop for kids.

Thanks, DR George!

Here's an interior shot that gives you an idea of the store's layout.  The cash register side was hardcovers and the opposite wall was paperbacks.  My Dad probably took this photo from the doorway to the kids' room.

She also entered a window decorating contest conducted by the publisher of the James Herriot series about a Yorkshire, England, veterinarian.  First prize was a trip to England, which she did not win.  But she did receive an honorable mention.  I think there are photos and the letter, but I can't put my hands on them at the moment.

Or is it too late for those vibes?

Not too late.  We missed our connection and are waiting for the next flight home e.  We could not get seats next to each other.
