I'm on the commission to nominate candidates for a federal magistrate opening.  Tonight I read a big stack of applications,  I can't disclose the number, let's just say lots of them.... we don't actually interview people until August, but we have to decide if everyone gets an interview or not, so I decided it was best to read them all now, take my notes and if we have to vote on a first cut I'm ready.

It's really interesting, actually.  This is my second time on the commission.  I enjoy it

That sounds like a prestigious assignment.

You are here!   It is considered to be an honor to serve on the commission.  I did a lot of work in federal court for years, but don't go there anymore, so it's nice.  Whoever we pick, I won't be appearing before them, lol I also get along very well with the District Court Judges and am not afraid to ask the applicants difficult questions from their background, so they like having me on the commission, at least that's what I was told :)

Of course being picked for the commission means they aren't considering you for the job, lol

Didn't you say last week that you didn't want to be a judge?

I don't want to be a judge. When the Chief Judge called me she asked if I was going to apply. I said "Should I?"  She told me it was a great job.  I knew right away I didn't want it so when she asked if I needed to think about it before accepting the position on the commission, I told her that I was so happy with my current situation that I didn't need to think about it.  She was pleased and said she really likes me on the commission. I do feel honored to be on it and I do take it very seriously.

But it's still the joke of the members that if you get invited to be on the commission, they aren't considering you for the job

Did you say that there is a curfew on how late a baseball game can go?

Yes, apparently the American Association of Independent Baseball has a rule that you can't start a new inning after midnight

I don't think they need to invoke it very often. But it makes sense.  Everyone needs a little sleep
