Today is the 43rd anniversary of my move to Middletown, Ohio, for my first professional library job. Here's the library and my first car, the tan AMC Hornet:

BK, the early start to the school year is due, in large part, to standardized testing. Since the tests are administered in the early spring and districts want to get as much prep in as possible, they need to get those "butts in seats" earlier than we used to start. We saw this developing as our son was finishing elementary school. We also saw that after testing week, nothng significant happened for the rest of the school year.

School started here on August 10

However, in Michigan - where summer tourism is HUGE - there's a state law that school cannot begin until after Labor Day.

It is crazy to me that a lot of kids go back to school in the summer. Here it is next Wednesday, August 31st.
