I got the OBC recording from the library recently and gave it three tries before giving up on it. Aural wallpaper but without that much character.

Am I missing something? Other than melody, that is.

I enjoyed the recording, but then, my standards aren't too high.

I liked the movie a lot. Maybe I expected a different sound for the characters.

Actually, it was Al Jolson himself (not Larry Parks) who performed "Swanee" in THE JOLSON STORY.

The entire number was done in a long shot and Jolson wore blackface.

I don't know why I didn't think of that earlier, since Jolie wanting to do the number is the central premise of the first act in my Jolson play.

Back from an omelet and an English muffin and in a bit of good timing, picking up a couple of packages. Listening to Stowkoski's Phase 4 recording of La Mer (and other Debussy and one Ravel piece). I like the wacky Phase 4 panning of the instruments on this piece - it's fun and it makes this one a little different than all the others - and the mastering is terrific. Then there was the David Zinman digital recording of Gershwin's Concerto in F and Ravel's Concerto in G - mastered at such a low level I would have to crank the new speakers almost to their maximum. Zinman's a good conductor and the soloist is good, but if I have to do that to actually hear it, it sucks. I'll give it a go in the den, where I don't care if I have to crank it up.

And my long-standing predictions about the new production of Merrily at the Annenberg are already proving true - the Sondheim freaks are posting that it's the BEST, it's BRILLIANT, it WORKS, they WEPT - I want to vomit on the ground from these people. And they of course are saying "this needs to be on B'way! And of course someone like Ken Davenport will probably bring it, as he did with this director's Spring Awakening - and we know how that worked out, not that he cares - not his dough. I especially liked the comment about the BRILLIANT lighting, with lights swinging to and fro and back and forth, and around and around - I am so tired of moving lights that are actually USED as moving lights. I think lighting today, as with sound today, and sets today, is just pathetic compared to the true artists of old. And wait till the LA critics (and I'm guessing the lead critic of the Times) wet themselves to say this is the production that makes the show work. I will be hugely surprised if it doesn't garner across the board raves.
