Quite a shock about Alan Thicke.  I remember him from "The Party Game," a charades-type show on Canadian TV in the 1970's.  He and his then-wife Gloria Loring were on the show occasionally.

Listening to a wonderful compilation of piano music from the cinema (not completely - on the Australian Decca Eloquence label - these remastering are justly praised - every one I've gotten has been superb.  This has all the war horses you'd ever want with an excellent pianist and in wonderful sound - Warsaw Concerto (finally a good version to listen to), Cornish Rhapsody, Spellbound, Rachmaninov's music used in Brief Encounter, Dream of Olwen, Rhapsody in Blue (a bit of a stretch but well done), and others.  I'm a sucker for all this stuff, most in the style of Rachmaninov.

Thanks, Kevin!

Dance competition Friday. Not ready. But am I ever?

I am dancing better, which means I still have more to do, learn and digest before getting out on the floor.

Well, because I came into work early, I can leave work early.  I want to do a little shopping, then I'll head home.

Be back later.

Listening to the three Rachmaninov symphonies with a conductor I've never heard of but which is part of that Australian Eloquence series - and the sound is fantastic and I have to say the performances of the first two symphonies are really top drawer.  The first symphony is especially good here in a way I haven't quite heard before - I haven't heard all that many firsts, but I kind of like this better than the Ormandy and the Previn versions.

After I finish the second, I'll go watch Fences.  The more I read about Hacksaw Ridge the less I want to watch it - apparently it's the standard Mel Gibson bathing in extreme guts and blood - he loves this stuff and the gorier the better - I hate that crap.

I'm starting to watch an old holiday weepie that I love. It's The Gathering with Ed Asner and Maureen Stapleton.

Watched the first half of Fences.  Pure unadulterated Oscar-bait filmmaking.  Mr. Washington did this on Broadway recently, and then he managed to get the dough to do a film.  It's instructive to watch James Earl Jones do one of the famous speeches on the Tonys (on You Tube) - his performance is so fierce and brilliant - then you watch Mr. Washington do the same speech from the revival and it gets - wait for it - laugh after laugh.  Mr. Jones doesn't get any laughs - in fact you can hear a pin drop.  I thought I was watching Neil Simon.  I'm not sure I blame Mr. Washington as much as the incredibly stupid audience, but it's not directed well or I don't think it would get laughs.

Did making the trip to get the pills increase your pain?

I think it best to wait until after I see FENCES to compare.  I want to like the movie.
