i know the movie was released in 2015, but I saw it in 2016, so the biggest shocker of a terrific performance was Lebron James in TRAINWRECK.

Onstage:  The whole cast of DEAR EVAN HANSEN was remarkable.

The replacement cast of BEAUTIFUL was also quite wonderful.

Danny Burstein was out as Tevye the day i saw FIDDLER ON THE ROOF, but the whole cast was great, and many many individual kudos to Alix Korey as Yenta and Adam Kantor as Motel.

I would guess my first exposure to Khachaturian was indeed ONE, TWO, THREE - which a friend's dad took us to when it opened.  I didn't remember it being a Christmas-y thing, but sure enough it opened in December 1961 and we had just moved to Fort Lauderdale the year before so we were basking in our newfound warm climate.  We were living in the part of town where we could walk to the movie theaters and everything else downtown, and that was a wonderful year for me.

The second thing in my memory is the piano concerto which someone played with the symphony there, and I became quite fond of it.  I was also fascinated that he had written one passage for an instrument called the flexatone, which they indeed used at the concert.  I think it duplicates the melody in the violins, and I never was able to really pick it out.  I think I still have the study size score I bought back then.

Danny Burstein was incredible in Indignation. Tracy Letts was also very good in that movie.

Kate Beckensale and Chloe Sevigny in Love & Friendship

Ben Foster in Hell or High Water

The leads of Florence Foster Jenkins

The third piece would have been the Adagio used in 2001, as BK reports, and what a magnificent usage that is.

I think someone else (probably a few someones) subsequently used it, but not in the genius way Kubrick knew to do it.

So, DR Ginny is getting the first eye done, probably as we speak, and I can't wait to hear her report whenever she's up to giving it.

Best vibes for a wonderful outcome!

Got a CD called Two Souls by a violinist named Mikhail Simonyan, who soloed with the San Antonio Symphony. It features the Khachaturian Violin Concerto and the Barber Concerto for Violin and Orchestra as well as the Barber Adagio for Strings. Really good stuff. Will have to haul it out later.

Listening to the concert Victoria Mallory and Kurt Peterson gave that's a sort of retrospective of their careers.

What with this week's overwhelming events surrounding Carrie Fisher and Debbie Reynolds, did anyone post this HBO clip here?  If so, please excuse the brain fart, but here it is, the recent documentary on them that's to air in early 2017.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=E1EnDqhFU6I&feature=youtu.be

A friend of mine pointed out what an incredible "Grey Gardens" feel permeates this particular clip.

I feel dumb for having never read any of Carrie Fisher's books.  I never even saw the film version of POSTCARDS FROM THE EDGE.  This is all going to be rectified soon, as I've had nothing but admiration for her in recent years and it's time I honored her on my bookshelf.

DR JohnG, thanks for the "Asheville" post.  They're good, but I think it lacked the yearning and tug the song has sd s solo.  Perhaps that's not going to happen out of context?

TOD:

I really haven't seen a lot of films that are up for Oscar yet.  I'm waiting for them to appear on RedBox.

I did like Jeff Bridges in HELL OR HIGH WATER.

TV?

THE PEOPLE AGAINST O.J. SIMPSON (or whatever it was called) and THE NIGHT MANAGER.
