Surprised at the Oscar nominations. Sort of. Octavia Spenser is beloved, but Janelle Monae is fierce and strong and wonderful from word one. And Taraji Hensen is a marvel.

I guess in honor of the TOD, which I haven't answered yet, I'm watching The Canterville Ghost with Charles Laughton.

Directed by Jules Dassin, whose work I'm beginning to discover. Rififi was spectular, Naked City had a great finale, Night and the City is wonderful. Topkapi is just plain fun.

Fun story about Hidden Figures. About 30 years or so ago, I interviewed a young actor named Olek Krupa who had just emigrated from the Soviet Union. He didn't speak English very clearly, but he was starring in a production of Dracula. You couldn't understand him from the stage, but it didn't much matter. He projected an almost animal sexuality that you understand why Lucy and Mina and most of the audience were hypnotized by him.

He's much older in Hidden Figures, where he plays an engineer who encourages Janelle Monae's character, but at least I could understand his English.

I'm listening to a reading of Virgil's Aeneid, which I first read back on college. Sadly, the reader is way too foppish, so every time there's a reference to "savage beasts" or "brutes," it comes off as funny instead of serious.
