DR Druxy, I watch Going My Way every other year or so at Christmas, but it wasn't a best picture. English Patient, however, I loved. I've seen it now a half-dozen times, including twice at the theater. The scene of lighting the chapel is a favorite--and it wasn't in the book.

Although my wife and many other people I know hated it, I enjoyed THE ENGLISH PATIENT, though it's not something I'd necessarily want to see again. On the other hand, FARGO is a movie that I've seen many times and will, in all likelihood, see many times again.

The same goes with GOING MY WAY and DOUBLE INDEMNITY. DOUBLE INDEMNITY is the film that has endured all these many years.

Certainly the worst choice for Best Picture occurred in 1952 when THE GREATEST SHOW ON EARTH beat out HIGH NOON, THE QUIET MAN, IVANHOE and MOULIN ROUGE. Not nominated that year were VIVA ZAPATA, THE BAD AND THE BEAUTIFUL and, get ready for this, SINGIN' IN THE RAIN.

I have seen Fargo about as many times as English Patient.

THE SHAWSHANK REDEMPTION is another film from that year that has endured.

And for me, THE LOST WEEKEND easily transcends being an "of the moment" film. I'm about due for a viewing of it.

I'm certainly not suggesting that THE LOST WEEKEND is a bad film. I'm just saying that it hasn't endured in popularity like SPELLBOUND, MILDRED PIERCE and another nominee, ANCHORS AWEIGH. It's a depressing movie and, I believe, that most people want to be entertained when they watch a film, not depressed.
