We've settled into our hotel on 46th St., walked to TKTS, bought tickets for the Miss Saigon matinee, and are having lunch at Pret á Manger across from the Broadway Theatre.

Neck surgery tomorrow.

I'll be off the board for a few days.

Positive thoughts, please.

Link to a warm parody-tribute to Bette Midler in Hello Dolly
(a parody by Fred Landau & Jan Horvath, with a vocal by Bruce Horvath)

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hv4JujI26zM

in the spirit of the fan who fainted at "Hello Dolly" the other night, but told the paramedics "I'd sooner die than miss Act 2!" (per the Page Six article in the Post)

That's great, Fred!  I wish I could see this...and just about anything in New York!

Shameless plug ahead...a friend posted this on FB about TAO's production of 1984:

Quote
I had the privilege tonight of catching a dress rehearsal of 1984 at TAO. It was a dress rehearsal (a good one), so I won't say more about the production. What I will say, and I'm saying it now because the podcast episode won't hit for nine days, is this dramatization of 1984 is the single most important play I've seen in this century. No exaggeration, no b.s.: It has to be seen by as many people in this region as logistically possible. And you can quote me on that.

Joshie has not been feeling well. I took him in for a recheck today and we found out that his thyroid is way high. That's good news. Bad would have been kidneys or cancer. He got some fluids and some meds to start on. He should be feeling better soon.

I just took my Happy Pill, so I should be getting nice and mellow in a few minutes. We leave for the periodontist in about a half hour. Last time they gave me some laughing gas and I slept through the whole thing. I hope they do the same today.

The meds should work fairly quickly.  Vibes I am correct and he is better super fast.

I am afraid to try laughing gas.

His temperature was low today. So I plugged in his heated bed, upon which he is now curled up.

I had laughing gas when I had my wisdom teeth removed when I was young. It was great.

Last time, I fell asleep. That was also great.

A very popular McDonald's in my neighborhood has shuttered its doors and removed its innards.

A completely gutted space.

I never once saw this McDonald's "lightly" used.  Customers were aplenty.

I think there has been some national downsizing...and with little regard for popularity of various sites.

I am curious if these two McDonald's were corporate owned or franchises.

I hope DR Ginny is in the air by now.

DR Jane, when I last posted we'd landed in New York and were waiting for a gate.  After 45 minutes they parked us as close to the terminal as possible and we walked across the tarmac right into baggage claim.

That explains why you settled in so quickly ;D

Back from my meeting, which was fine.  And from Guitar Center where I bought a new MIDI/audio interface because my existing one seems to have bought the farm.

Something else is bugging me about that Du-Par's and McDonald's location.

Ask BK:  Did that McDonald's originally replace something older and more interesting like maybe another Bob's Big Boy or [you name it]?  I'd be thinking back as far as the '70s, and I could be totally wrong, but I'd almost swear I remember there was something more of interest in that spot than just the Du-Par's.

I think the McDonald's was always where it was, but there was a Tiny Naylor's to the west of Du-Par's by the car wash that used to be on the corner of Laurel Canyon and Ventura, where there is now yet another strip mall.

Nice.  Even though I didn't know the term Googie style back then, a Tiny Naylor's like that would also have caught my attention.

Another silly question:

Mid-to-late 1980s, I think this was in the shopping strip behind Du-Par's, but it might have been some other such strip along that same stretch of Ventura and on the same side of the road -- I recall being taken to an informal but nice sit-down Italian jernt that was popular for a while.  No idea how long it lasted.  Does that sound familiar?
