Saturday morning greetings!  Tomorrow is the second birthday party for our great-nephew J and Mary Linda has taken over our kitchen to bake his cake.  Yay, no cooking for me today!

A Very Happy Second Birthday to your Great-Nephew, Ginny!

Thanks, DR George.  His cake turned out beautiful!

I haven't seen the Pasteis de Belem yet.

It's the same thing. Belem is a neighborhood of Lisbon and this massive place, about a square city block, sells them under that name.

Today I will be missing two (count 'em) Derby par-tays.  I refer, of course, to the Kentucky variety.  These seem to be all the rage now.  I don't suppose it's a terribly new thing, but I don't recall anyone I know ever throwing Derby parties, and now they're everywhere you look.

Probably because I'm on the left coast, I've never been to a Kentucky Derby par-tay, or even a party.

You have lived a deprived life. I used to throw a derby party every year. Some are legendary.

Here's an interview with Larry Cohen from the Roger Ebert website:

Went to a friend's house for a combination birthday party and game night. We played Trivial Pursuit Pop Culture edition.

My team won on a Bruce Springsteen question. What two magazines did he appear on the cover of in the same week in 1975?

Back when being on the cover off Time and Newsweek meant something.

Started watching In Dubious Battle, James Franco's film version of the Steinbeck novel. It's not very good so far.

The previews were depressing. Apparently Meg Ryan has directed a remake of The Human Comedy, based on Saroyan's novel. But they changed the name to Ithaca and turned this modest, touching work into an epic replete with battle scenes, etc.

Now on to ... something or other.

Oh yeah.  A couple of little spring concerts, and auditions for Best Worst etc.

The same scam that was tried with Dad. A phone caller convinced her that one of her grandsons was in jail somewhere and needed bail money.

Well, the event was very long and VERY cold - I pretty much kept my trap shut as much as possible, but when people are asking you things you do kind of have to speak.  It was way crowded and VERY noisy until the seating, and I have a splitting headache.  The song moment finally happened at around nine and I have to say it was kind of perfect and I also have to say the song landed like gangbusters.  The dad, who was the focus of the song, was weeping throughout.  The mom and two daughters delivered and so did the group who ends it.  It got a standing ovation, and the dad came right over to me and hugged me, as did the rest of the family.  Then lots of sweet people came up to me - I got out of there ten minutes later, but I'm praying the cold air didn't kill me.
