Starting the arduous task of the Cluytens set.  So much music I don't know at all, so that will be fun.  Also in this set is a complete Beethoven symphonies, so that will be interesting.  Also complete Ravel music that this conductor is known for.  And I'm very intrigued by the early stuff from 78s and the early mono tape recordings so I'm uploading those.  I first listened to the Shostakovich 11th - I had this performance and loved it on another CD, but in the final movement there was a sudden shift to mono sound rather than the glorious early stereo I'd been hearing - it only lasted about forty seconds but very jarring.  Sadly, it hasn't been fixed - I'm guessing there was tape damage there that couldn't be repaired and it sounds like they went from a mono LP - I'm wondering if there was a separate mono tape recorder running, because otherwise why wouldn't they have gotten a stereo LP?  Unless: It was never released in stereo - and that's certainly possible and especially if there was this problem.  I'm now listening to Richard Strauss's Don Juan - don't know it at all but am enjoying it quite a lot.

I had never owned this nor the Bailey/Calloway recording until I bought both of them a few years ago.  I love both recordings. :)

From yesterday:
What might've helped [last night's opening night audience for TAO's 5 Lesbians Eating a Quiche] may be because tomorrow [today] is the Pride march here in Olympia.  The cast of the show is going to march in the parade with signs advertising the show, so hopefully that'll drum up interest...and bring a greater awareness of our theater group

Great idea, George!

It is!  I don't know who came up with the idea, but everyone loved it!

Me too.  Other than THE BRAIN FROM PLANET X and THE LAST STARFIGHTER, I find it to be the almost perfect musical comedy.

Well, I hate to do it, but I must get to sleep now.  I have to get up early in the morning to help my sister set up the PFLAG booth.  It'll definitely be a lot of fun!

Have a good day, all!

TCB or George, have you ever worked at or seen anything at Second Story in Redmond, Washington?  (I hear Redmond is 15 miles from Seattle.)   They seem quite interested in including THE LAST STARFIGHTER musical in their 2018 season, assuming details are worked out, of course.   They'd contacted BK and we referred them to the licensing company.    We wouldn't be involved with the production, but if it's a multi-week run, I'd probably fly out to see it.

And again, thanks to Bk for the referral.

I so wish I could see BK's DIAL 'M'.

Actually, I've been toying with the idea of dialing 'M' myself sometime.  Just to see what might happen.

So many murder scenes.  So little time.

How about this for a standout? -- the silent one in TORN CURTAIN.

My late friend and publicity client, Dan O'Herlihy, co-starred in the movie (non-musical) version of THE LAST STARFIGHTER.

BK had played the roles of Grig (played on the screen by Dan O'Herlihy) and Otis in the New York Musical festival reading of the musical.

as mentioned in the Playbill article from back then

Garrett Lewis replaced Carlton Carpenter when he broke his leg in London during rehearsals, but I saw much o0f the London cast when the company played Cincinnati on its way to Viet Nam, Japan, and London.  She was fantastic, aqnd the production remains one of the best things I ever saw.
