I miss Artie's:  When good delis go dead.  I can't even think of a good Jewish deli at this point.  DR Jane and I were lucky to get to the 2nd Avenue Deli before it closed, the Carnegie Deli has gone the way of all flesh, I believe.

Thank you for taking me there.  It was a real treat.  I also had the pleasure of experiencing Arts.   It is sad they are all gone.

DR Ginny, I have been there.  Former DR PennyO and I were there several times.

The deli situation in NYC is absolutely horrible, with the loss of the Stage (I think that was the first big one to go), Second Avenue Deli, Carnegie Deli, one on 57th and Sixth whose name I never remembered (did it start with "L"? - something like "Lenny's?), the most recent blow of the infuriating overnight loss of Artie's, and I believe even a few others in Manhattan that were INSTITUTIONS for decades.  It's a rotten situation.  I'd say "inexplicable", but mostly it's just rotten as many of these losses are about commercial rents and the abysmal failure to control them to any extent in order to preserve things that were unique about NYC.

Sorry to hear about the Nate 'n Al's visit, but observing from afar, and in my ignorance, I'd attribute that at least partly to the loss of nearly all that was good about the Golden Triangle of Beverly Hills.  One can always hope it was just the luck of the draw, but the waitress's attitude is a bad sign.  Also, and I mean nothing sexist about this, but didn't they used to always employ the more stereotypical male waiters who had been there for a hundred years?

One of the last times I was at my all time favorite deli, Nate 'not Al's, our waitress who had been there forever whispered the coleslaw is no longer the same.  I rarely remember male waiters.  The men were usually behind the counter.

It still breaks my heart that I can no longer get the best coleslaw ever.  Once Nate and Alaska were gone it became inconsistent and then eventually consistently not the same as what I had been eating my entire life :(

Ask BK:

I think you've said you don't like Art's in Studio City.  Wouldn't it at least provide the vibe and (hopefully) some of the taste of the real thing?  Are the regulars a decent crowd?  I've only been there a few times and have probably just had the pastrami on rye, cole slaw on the side, and coffee or a Coke (my defaults), perhaps a slice of cheesecake, but for me it had the vibe and as far as I know I was happy with the food.

Art's has a fine vibe and some things there are fine - just not the pastrami or corned beef.  But I haven't been there in a decade.

I hate it when good restaurants start circling the drain.

Hope the kidney twinge last night was just a fluke (not the fish). Feel good so far.

Jake LaMotta has died at age 95. I bought Raging Bull a few weeks ago. I may have to watch it now.

I had to find the keyboard for the old computer and that took me longer than I thought.  I cannot open the portal for the battery and that bothers me, since I was the one who opened it last and now it's jammed.  I hope Val can open ut and replace the battery.  I'd hate to have him buy a keyboard.

I blame the coleslaw going down the drain on the grandsons.

Factor's went downhill for a lot of years and has returned so there is still hope for Nate 'n Al's.

DR ELMORE - even here in the wilderness there are always tons of APPLE keyboards at the thrift shops!

But my guess is that Val will be able to open it up.

My question for ASK BK DAY:

If you could own the director's script and notes from any film or play or musical, which one would it be?

Hello, all. I am alive and well and living in Johnston SC.

My laptop arrived this afternoon, and I just made the WiFi connection.

Belated birthday greetings (on this here blog, that is) to DR Elmo.  I sent him a FB greeting, but it never seems official until it's done here.

I feel like I'm visiting, even though many of my things have arrived via USPS and UPS.  My household goods arrive Oct. 10th, and that includes my plasma TV and all my movies and CDs (except for a few I've received here over the  past six weeks).

I have no dirt as of yet.  Probably won't be much.  More like folksy observations of things that weird me out after 24 years in California.

The food has been really good, though.

I understand there was a minor quake in LA.  I'm happy to say that we don't have those very often over here.  They DO happen, of course, but nothing as major as all the faults at work in CA.

We do get hurricanes, of sorts.  Johnston got 5 inches of rain off tropical storm (formerly Hurricane) Irma. And the winds blew and howled, according to locals.

I was following DR Michael Shayne's evacuation of Florida during Irma and noted his return this past weekend.  Haven't caught up yet, so I don't know what he found when he got home.

Listening to a composer completely new to me - I've never heard one note of this person's music - but whilst writing the notes for the Claus Ogerman CD Ogerman lists this man as one of his two main musical influences - the other being Scriabin.  This fellow is named Max Reger.  I'm listening to disc once of this set - and yes, while some of the music is not Ogerman-esque at all, some of it absolutely has the same sort of orchestral color that Ogerman has.  Interesting to hear this stuff and I like this guy so far.

DR Ron it is nice to see you posting again.  Oct 10th is a long time to wait for your household goods.  Since you were in a position to wait did you find a more economical method of shipment, such as a shipping pod?
