They went to the ER at about noon on Friday and didn't get out of there until almost five o'clock.

The ER doc put it in a sling and referred her to an orthopedic doctor.

She is going to have surgery on Friday morning to insert a pin and some screws.

Why a break needs to be followed up with an orthopedic doctor.  I was shocked when my follow up visit at the ER for a broken wrist also required surgery for a pin.  At least it was removed after my break healed.  In my case the ER doctor said I could take it out of the sling to shower. The specialist said I could have made the break worse & done some real damage.  The direction of the break required the pin to keep it from getting larger.
