GEE may very well be the finest book Kimmel has written, to date. It is a story of not one, but two willful and headstrong women. Both “very peculiar girls.” One, GEE (yes, all capitals) is born in the early days of the 20th century; the other, Peyton, is starting life in the 21st century. The first woman we watch living her life, her 94 years of life, through the unfolding decades of America. From the two great wars and the Depression, through JFK and 9/11; GEE experiences all the happiness and all the heartbreak of life. Peyton, at seventeen is truly just beginning to fully experience the world.
Kimmel has carefully and lovingly crafted the stories of these two female characters. Part one tells the story of GEE, and Part two belongs to Peyton. Kimmel’s writing is superb. Once you start reading this book you will find it impossible to put down. How can these two women be so different, and yet, so much alike? You truly won’t want this book to end. I highly recommend this book to everyone. A great read."
