Starting to watch March or Die, which is a movie I had wanted to see way back when. I really like Gene Hackman, Catherine Deneuve and Maurice Jarre's music. But when I saw the words "Lew Grade presents ...," my heart kinda sank.

George Shearing is sheer magic.  That is all I'm saying.

Bruce, this is what I posted there, might as well put same thing here:

I'm not so sure the other factors like the chocolate shop cut in favor of the "Chicago" company.

Are we to believe the people at "Chicago" knew nothing about his partner having lost his income, and lots of all these factors mentioned?  Even if not that:  Are we to believe that no one in management knew they were taking away his and his partner's only source of income, whether they knew about the chocolate shop or not?

If they had just fired him, he'd get his 30,000+ buyout plus his months of unemployment insurance at least.  What they were trying to do instead was shame him into  quitting voluntarily - which of course meant not getting the 30,000+ buyout, and obviously no unemployment insurance because (in NY) you don't get that if you quit - nothing!   If he quit:  No cushion at all to ease him back, while finding new opportunities.

If you don't have any money saved or are in debt, that $50,000 or $60,000 can be the difference between having a place to live while you regroup vs. not having one.  (If the $106,000 a year were the only money for the couple, while that number sounds like a lot, that could mean they had no savings to fall back on.  If you're an employee, a lot of income taxes are taken out of that before you get your paycheck.

FJL, too many suppositions for me.  My only point was that there was more to this story than his partner and family were putting out there.  And that there were other factors involved.  While this is a supposition on my part, I don't think the rehearsal (ONE rehearsal) would have caused anyone to do anything drastic.  I wasn't in the room so I don't know how drastic any of it was, nor does anyone since we're only hearing one side of this at the moment.  Perhaps when the investigation is done we'll have more information.  I just appears to me (supposition) that it was a combo platter of factors and also remember that he was NOT fired from Chicago, nor had he quit - that salary was still coming in every week.  While I think giving anyone that kind of contract is stupid, that's what they gave him, probably never thinking in their wildest imaginings that it would still be running twenty-two years on.

All that said, it's never a great idea to berate performers - you don't really get good results by doing so.

Catherine Deneuve does not perform well in English.

One of the silliest things in this movie is that Terence Hill marches across the desert but never sweats.

The factors that are clear:

If they fired him, he'd get the buyout ($30,000 to$40,000 in the article) and $10,000 or so unemployment

If they shamed him and made life so unpleasant to get him to quit, which seems not ti be in doubt that was their goal - Zero buyout and Zero unemployment insurance.

Whether they knew he and his partner had no other income - yes, that's speculative.  But anywhere I've worked in taxes, everyone knew everyone's spouse or partner's "business" - I can't imagine the company didn't know no other income was coming in for him and his partner, given the nature of theater.

My "favorites" are the bullies who are in powerful positions (like say a VP of MAC) and when you try to fight back, if you fight back even a little more than they like, they say you're bullying them.

Earlier I went to Ralph's and got a couple of drumettes for a snack - and now my tummy is not feeling too well.  I'm sipping a Canada Dry and I popped a Pepcid so hopefully that will help.

Now Shearing with the Robert Farnon Orchestra - made this for Telarc in 1993, bringing back his quintet sound that made him famous - Farnon was one of the great arrangers and this album is luscious.
