I met Carole Shelley after seeing a Joe Orton play she was starring in at MTC.  I was on a date with a guy who knew her quite well, and he needed to say hello because she knew he was there.  (This was still the '80's, so no email to communicate or adjust plans.)  She stepped out into the lobby clearly looking for David, and ran over to him bursting with gossip.  Before she spoke too much, David introduced me, she was very nice and asked if I'm safe to tell her gossip in front of.  (Since this was long before the net, who was I going to tell, and it was something that was going to be in the papers in a few days anyway, she just knew it before anybody and David could keep a secret like nobody's business.)  They said just keep it quiet until the story breaks.

I can't even remember what it was.  But she was a delight to meet.  In this internet era, she'd have had to be more careful who she said the days-in-advance info around.  There were other people in the lobby area, including some who came up to her for autographs.

That was What the Butler Saw, I believe. She was Faye, the murdering nurse, in Orton's Loot in its original Broadway run.

Yes, that makes sense.  Looks like it was February 1989 or around then.

Her most interesting iobdb (off-Broadway) credit was "Shout: The Mod Musical"

She did a lot of interesting work off-Broadway in addition to her big Broadway hits.

I'm invited to my friend Dan's for a barbecue.  Well, I told him I'd bring my own veggie burger.

What is the name of the British (?) comedy....

Takes place in a small cafe breakfast lunch place owned by a brother and sister.  The show is named for the strange character who torments the son of his ex comedy partner.

My gratitude to one and all for the condolences and the birthday greetings.

It's a very hard day.

My mother suffered greatly on her last day.  Not even morphine gave her much comfort.  We all knew she could go at any time, but I held out hope that she might recover.

No nursing home for her now.   I am having her cremated.  She will be interred in the plot next to my father's grave.  When it is my time, I, too, will be cremated and interred in the same plot.

Her service is Tuesday.  I have relatives who needed travel time and, with the Labor Day weekend, a Tuesday memorial service seemed best for all.

Will need to get on with life after that, and I don't really know where to start.   But I'll get there.

Stay positive, DR Ron.  There's much to do before you can consider your mother laid to rest.  Are you her executor?

Vibes of comfort to DR Ron on a most difficult birthday. I hope there are at least a few small pleasures.
