So, High and Low.

I watched it in two parts, Friday and Saturday night. I would like to have gotten completely through it in one sitting for my first time, but the spirit moved me too late on Friday for that to happen and I started nodding off at about the two-thirds point. So I had to back it up a little bit last night and carry on from there. But what a great movie, gripping throughout.

Afterwards, I watched the three extra features:  the "making of" documentary, a 1981 TV talk show interview with Toshiro Mifune, and a more recent interview with Tsutomu Yamazaki who plays the kidnapper. All three are invaluable, but the documentary can be tough going due to challenges in following the subtitles. The English ones are often too light against a light background, and they have to share the space with another set of Asian subtitles that are hard-coded and can't be turned off. On my player you can move standard on-disc subtitles up and down on the lower half of the screen, but these are a challenge regardless. (On the movie they're great; I can move them into the border underneath the widescreen picture.)

I'll let this digest for a few days, then watch the movie straight through while listening to the commentary. I'm also adding King's Ransom, an Ed McBain book I'd never read, to my Kindle.

That should say “inexplicably never read.” I LOVE Ed McBain and need to read more.

Strange post alleging something vague about the stage and TV ("Smash") writer.  Even more strange that Talkin Broadway's owners has left this insinuation with no back-up info on its site since 7 pm last night.

My teen and I were there tonight.   This was an excellent Kritzerland, just great, great material, super singers and lots of nice vibes at Vitellos.  Congratulations to all ----

I think folks will like the new venue, it's in a charming neighborhood, the room is cozier than the Federal, and not a bad seat in the house.  Plus a real full menu (Thank the Lord), and they even have BREAD while you're waiting for the meal to come up.   Lovely wait staff.  We're sold.

Thanks for this description!  It sounds like BK has triumphed and landed on his feet yet again!

Wonderful "What If". And also that funny "East Side Story" opener!

Kritzerland Upstairs at Vitello's was great last night! For me, Eric Thomas Petersen doing his opening number from School of Rock was a big highlight. And Mark and I always love everything Jenna Lea Rosen does.
What Bruce didn't talk about in his notes was that there were actually TWO What If performances last night. Bruce performed his own What If of...what if Rogers and Hammerstein, instead of writing "The Sound of Music" had written "Assassins", sung to the tune of "The Lonely Goatherd". It was very funny!

TOD:
This is such a hard question. Is a job hard because you're just all wrong for it, or are you right for it, but it's just very complicated and takes a long time?
I once had a job as an instructional designer that I was completely wrong for because I'm the most non-creative person I know. So, it was hard to get motivated.
Probably the job I have now as a computer programmer is the most difficult job I've ever had because I was never really formally trained for it. I'm largely self-taught thanks to Google. I really love it though.

Thanks also to you Amy, for taking the time to write this.

BK, is there video of the "Lonely Goatherd" number?

I'm not sure I ever posted the R&H Assassins from the actual What If review, where we did it in the Sound of Music costumes - really amusing.  I just did the first verse last night by way of explaining the conceit.  I think the entire thing is printed in Writer's Block, but here's the first verse:

High on a hill stood a lone assassin
Lay-ee-o-de-lay-ee-o-de-lay-ee-oo
He shot the Prez when the Prez was passin'
Lay-ee-o-de-lay-ee-o-de-loo
Oh, oh, did you hear a gunshot
Oh, oh, from the grassy knoll
Oh, oh, was there only one shot
Well, why don't we take a poll

And the East Side Story thing came to me just prior to the show and I wrote its final two lines just before going up to do it.

DR TCB.....you will always be glad if you GO to at least a little bit of your 50th High School Reunion.

Jack, you probably had a happier high school experience than I had, but I am considering it.
