The theater where I usher has a big gala fundraiser every year. The first year the artist was Paul McCartney, then Lionel Ritchie, Dolly Parton and Steven Tyler. This year it's Paul Abdul, who fell off the stage in her big opener last night in Mississippi. This is also the first year that the theater is asking the volunteer ushers to push the concert to our friends on social media in order to sell tickets. Ouch.

OK, this movie should have ended 15 minutes to go and there's still 15 minutes left.

There's an Advent calendar filled with rose' and sparkling wine. I say, how else would you get through the holiday season? Lift your Christmas spirits, indeed.

OK, so the movie finally answered my earlier question. Yes, they are.

Back from dinner at my brother and sister-in-law’s house.  We had salad and pasta with homemade sauce.  We had a nice time.

Sounds nice.

It does.

I remember being surprised when she played a pretty small role in "Starlight Express" - but I was also surprised that Alice Ripley played a small role in "American Psycho,"  and that in D.C. at Kennedy Center, Karen Ziemba took a featured billing role in "Little Dancer" in 2014 (and she did get entrance applause).

Back from our first official run-through of the show - very rough, not in terms of staging and getting through it, but calling for lines (expected) and low energy throughout (not expected).  It ran around ninety-six minutes, but when it's all smooth and tight and paced correctly it will absolutely run a little under ninety, which is exactly what I want.  I gave a little talk after to emphasize what my expectations are from here on in, and what the most important things to think about were.

And then I was assaulted after rehearsal by one actor after another with sudden conflicts and I was ready to either kill these people or  shut down the show.  I'm old school - if I commit to something, then that's a COMMITMENT.  I was offered this revue to direct and they wanted to do it in late October and it pays and everything - but I told them I could not commit to it because of my COMMITMENT to A Carol Christmas, and that if they wanted me we'd have to do the performance the week after Carol opens.  I didn't go to the theater and say, "Gee, I'm gonna do this other thing so I'll have to miss five or six rehearsals."  So, one gal has to miss Thursday and her role is substantial so there is no way to run the show without her there - unfair to everyone else, of course.  She simply booked a gig and they changed their time from our day off to Thursday - there was no discussion, she's missing and that's it, but promises to miss no other rehearsals (she hasn't missed any up to this point) - but what if they come to her and say "We need you on these other days now?"  She says she'll have a talk with them.

Then actress two started in - she has to miss Halloween's rehearsal AND because she's arranged her work schedule so she could do tech and our mid-week previews, she's now saying her boss will need her to cover for him and she'll have to miss one or two (or who knows how many) run-throughs.  I couldn't even talk to her so I put her with Doug and our co-producer.  The chutzpah of this is just mind-boggling and they only care about themselves and not about their fellow cast members, the show, and how all of it impacts us all.  We'll see how that all plays out.

And then the icing on the cake - another actress is in a short film that's opening a short film festival in Monaco and she wants to go - and is asking us to get an understudy for our third weekend of shows.  I must say, Doug went ballistic before I could.  She's saying she'll find someone and teach them everything.  I'm saying that she can't even get through her stuff properly at this point - how will she teach somebody else.  And who is the somebody else?  And I'm not just accepting anyone, for God's sake.  I mean, it's a short film, who gives a crap - probably shot on an iPhone.  But she really wants to go.  I'm not sure how that will play out, because Doug is basically saying if she misses we'll cancel that weekend and the theater will lose seven or eight grand.  And I don't think it would make her fellow cast members happy to cancel. But I'm not having someone come in and do this show who isn't fully prepared and directed and ready - that's just amateur.  We'll see how it plays out.  And that was the end of my rehearsal and it kept me at the theater an extra hour.

Today’s doctor appointment coincides with my annual pee test.  Since I take a controlled substance, I am required to be tested once a year to proof that I am actually taking the drug and not selling them on the street corner.
