DR Jeanne a friend needs to make a decision regarding vision correction during cataract surgery. Talking about it got me thinking.....
How is your vision now?
Jane, I am having LOTS of problems with my vision and I am not at all happy with the response I'm getting from the conventional (HMO) ophthalmologist. I am thus trying some alternative methods, which I'll share when I know more.
That said, if your friend is wondering if she should get a Toric lens implant, I'd say yes. BUT, there is the possibility of a secondary cataract--that's what I have--but I believe that can happen even without the Toric lens. My gripe is that they should tell you that this is a possibility, how to recognize it, and what to do. My medical team did none of that.
If your friend is considering near-vision correction, I'd say yes if you're on the computer or reading much of the day. But again, your vision changes after a few years. I could read the computer or a book very comfortably without glasses three years ago (following the surgery). I can't now; I have to get closer to the computer screen. As soon as it's 2019 I'll book with my optometrist and do a new exam. I have a prescription I could use now for the computer glasses, but I'd like to do a recheck first.
I probably would have made the same decision had I known what would happen, but I feel there is far too much marketing and not enough reality, ie, cautions, thus keeping the patient in the dark.
Good luck to your friend.
