Do you have any plans for  New Years Eve?

I don’t do anything, and I never go out on New Year’s Eve.

Although since quitting back in 1986 I cannot abide the smell of cigarettes either

My mom quit in 1984, about a month before my niece was born.  It took quite a few months, but my mom no longer likes the smell, either.

Although every once in a while I get a strong urge tohave a cigarette

I assume it would  taste horrible, but I don't dare take the chance that I would once again become addicted

I was told , unofficially, by the outgoing lady that traditionally the office closes early on New Years Eve

The libraries that normally stay open until 7:00 pm (including the headquarters where I work) have to close at 6:00 on New Year's Eve.  And we don't get the hour for free.  We have to either get to work early, or work an extra hour sometime that week, or take vacation.

I don’t do anything, and I never go out on New Year’s Eve.

We used to have an open house in New Years Eve with a buffet and we would play games like Jenga and wrap up by about 1 am

I don't think that my family is going to get together this New Year's Eve, like we have in the past.  I don't have any other plans (yet), so who knows what I'll be doing. :-\

We stopped doing that after I changed jobs because we always worked a full day New Year's Eve , at my previous office I had always had New Year's Eve off

Why do you have to close at six?

The building will "officially" be closed at 6:00, which just means that we can't work past then...really meaning having any time on our time sheets past six that night.  There isn't anyone making us actually get out of the building by exactly 6:00 pm.  It's all on the honor system.

Yup.  They say that they want us to be "safe," but really what difference will one hour make?

It doesn’t sound like an honor to keep working and not get paid.
