Last night I kept uncontrollably falling asleep, but it was one of those times when you're physically and mentally so exhausted that you aren't relaxing. I kept jolting awake after only a couple of minutes. I finally settled into a real sleep, but it was long in coming. Feeling pretty damned good now, happy to say.

Tuesday morning greetings and Happy New Year! It was pretty low-key around here last night, but we did manage to see the ball drop in Times Square. No big plans for today, either - just watching the Rose Parade and some football. I have no voice, for the second day in a row.

Starting the year with a Criterion Collection offering that I haven't watched in the hopes it will set a trend. This one is Olivier in Richard III. The movie looks great and seems well directed, but I'm not sold on it after 15 minutes. Olivier the actor is so over the top, he might as well be leftover ham.

I'm going on a diet, which always requires a new toy to motivate me, like a new scale or something like that. This year, since I finally got a smart phone, I'm using a calorie-counting app called "Lose It!" I just entered my oatmeal breakfast.

I might be seeing the movie, "Vice" with a friend.

I've watched 1:45 of this movie and have had enough of Richard's villainy. I may have to have a nap before I watch the finale.

His name won't mean anything to anyone, but I just learned that Richard Weiner, highly respected percussionist with the Cleveland Orchestra for nearly five decades (he was hired by George Szell in the early 60s), has died. Not that I could have told you he was still with us, had anyone asked, but sometimes such news is notable, regardless.

Back in the day I knew everyone in this ca-1966 Cleveland Institute of Music photo with Weiner, two of whom are still friends.
